Congratulations to the Rotary Club of New Tampa, which will host the annual Taste of New Tampa & Wesley Chapel for the third year in a row, again at what is now being called AdventHealth Center Ice (AHCI) on Sunday, March 24, 2019, noon-4 p.m.
The club (which meets Fridays at 7 a.m at Tampa Palms Golf & Country Club) did an excellent job of rounding up not only many of your returning favorite eateries from the last two years, but also some outstanding newcomers among the 29 restaurants and eleven beverage purveyors that had signed up to participate in the Taste by our press time on March 15.
We caught up with Taste co-chairs Karen Frashier and Jennifer Cofini and asked them about what new and old favorites attendees will be enjoying at this yearâs Taste:
NN: How excited is everyone about this yearâs Taste of New Tampa event?
TONT: Weâve had the pleasure to give away Taste tickets at several North Tampa Bay Chamber and community events. We always ask the crowd if they know why weâre there and whatâs coming up. A large percentage of the crowd shouts back âTaste of New Tampa & Wesley Chapel.â Hearing that crowd response makes our day!
The Rotary Club of New Tampa is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) hosting this event with the Chamber to support scholarships and our charities. Our committee has grown to 20 Rotarians and Chamber volunteers. Weâre invested.
NN: What do you have planned?
TONT: Weâve got 40 food and beverage vendors that will start tummies grumbling the minute guests enter Rink C at AdventHealth Center Ice.
The Freedom High Naval Junior ROTC flag corps will kick off the festivities, along with: Denyse Bales-Chubb, the CEO of AdventHealth Wesley Chapel; Dist. 7 Tampa City Councilman Luis Viera; and Mike Wells, the chairman of the Pasco County Board of Commissioners.
Then, the Freedom High School drum corps will get the party started by marching throughout the venue. Attendees have told us they want tables spread throughout the venue so they can hang out with friends and neighbors. Done!
NN: So, whatâs new at this yearâs Taste?
TONT: Weâve added cookie decorating to the photo booth and kids painting/art booth located in the family fun area. A Dash of Salt ân Pepper, DCA Media Consulting and Pinotâs Palette Wesley Chapel are sponsoring the fun for kids.
Our presenting sponsor is Advent Health Wesley Chapel. The Taste of New Tampa & Wesley Chapel focuses on friends, family and food â three important building blocks to whole, healthy lives. Building blocks that inspire both the Rotary Club of New Tampa and AdventHealth Wesley Chapel to serve our North Tampa Bay neighbors.
NN: What restaurants are you particularly excited to see that you think the locals will be happy to see?
TONT: Taste attendees will be particularly interested to see how the chef showdown between past winners Ciccioâs Cali, Noble Crust and Nothing Bundt Cakes shakes out. Pincherâs, Vom Fass, Blondieâs Cookies, Fat Rabbit, Cinebistro, Chuyâs and Top Shelf Sports Lounge were crowd favorites, too.
Earth Fare, a green grocer which newly opened on S.R. 56 (across from Tampa Premium Outlets) and Bahama Breeze are bringing their chefsâ A games.
NN: What about any under the radar places? Maybe some eateries that arenât located nearby or are new to the area that many will be getting a first taste of?
TONT: Taste foodies will be especially interested in locally owned food and beverage purveyors such as Avaâs Low Country Cuisine, Pomodoro Pizza and the Ice Dreammm Shop. They can have their cake and eat it too from the newly opened community venue called Canterbury Hall at Grace Church Tampa Palms. And, Batter & Dough is offering yummy filled mini-pancakes.
NN: Other than food samples, what else can people look forward to at the Taste?
TONT: There will be big competition in the beverage category this year with Coppertail Brewing competing with 81 Bay, Zephyrhills, Time for Wine. The Brass Tap and PRP Wine International. New beverage options include Blue Chair Bay Rum and Buttermilk Provisions sangria. Chamber chair Karen Tillman-Gosselin with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services is sponsoring the water again this year and weâll have a booth for soft drinks.
NN: What do you expect or hope for in terms of attendees? Talk about the growth of the event over the past two years, and how Center Ice has proven to be an ideal facility.
TONT: The event has a 20-year history as one of North Tampa Bayâs premier events.
Last year we hosted 2,000 guests. Based on history and the growth weâve seen over three years, we expect 3,000 guests this year. AdventHealth Center Ice is a perfect location because the event is indoors â no worries about the weather. The parking is free and plentiful in front and behind the building. Weâll have volunteers in the lots helping guests locate parking and directing people to open parking. Plus, Taste-goers who present a Taste ticket the day of the event can get free ice skate rental to glide off the calories after snacking their way through the restaurants and beverage purveyors.
NN: What charitable organizations receive the proceeds that are raised?
TONT: Proceeds support high school scholarships through the North Tampa Bay Chamber and charities supported by the Rotary Club of New Tampa. In 2018, the Rotary Club of New Tampa donated more than $46,000 to local and Rotary International Foundation signature projects, including End Polio Now, Feeding Tampa Bay and the Fisher House at the Haley VA Hospital.
Signature youth programs such as Interact, Rotaract and Seminar for Tomorrowâs Leaders help young people develop leadership skills. Find the complete list on TasteOfNewTampa.org/nonprofitsbenefit.html.
So, when Jannah and I attended a great Super Bowl party at our friends Torrie and Keith Weinsteinâs beautiful motor home at the Quail Run RV Park off Old Pasco Rd. in Wesley Chapel, we had no idea we would end up singing karaoke every night for the next four in âThe Chapâ (plus a fifth night in New Tampa).
How did this come about and why would anyone subject themselves to not just attending five consecutive karaoke nights, but singing every one of those nights?
To be honest, none of us are really sure how it all happened, but it started with an innocent comment during the Super Bowl from Torrie that âthey have karaoke here tomorrow afternoon. Wanna go?â
So, Jannah and I made our way back through the private gates of this really nice RV park the following afternoon â as karaoke at Quail Run begins promptly at 6 and ends even more promptly at 9. Unlike most karaoke locales, which are bars, you can bring your own âliquid courageâ to Quail Run, which provides the karaoke just for its residents and their guests.
The really funny thing was that these mostly-older-than-us local residents found a way to line dance to every song the entire night. I mean, of course theyâd line dance to âI Got Friends in Low Places,â but I was flabbergasted that they also did a different line dance when I sang Billy Joelâs âPiano Man.â Line dancing to âPiano Man?â Really?
Even so, the folks were very hospitable and they did seem to like the rendition of the Kenny Rogers/Dolly Parton hit âIslands in the Streamâ that Jannah and I do as one of our many duets. But of course, they especially loved Torrie, who is this tiny little girl with a true set of pipes. Iâm pretty sure that the Quail Run folks would pay a cover charge to sit and listen to an evening of just Torrie singing âThis Ainât Your Mamaâs Broken Heartâ and other line-dance-able tunes. In fact, someone even suggested it to the management at Quail Run.
But, when we all realized that we were doing karaoke on a Monday night for the first time, we also recognized that in New Tampa and Wesley Chapel alone, you currently can sing at an open-to-the-public karaoke bar every Tuesday through Friday. I canât tell you exactly how we went from saying that we could to agreeing that we were going to, but hereâs how the rest of our week went:
Tuesday Night â The Brass Tap
In stark contrast to Quail Run, the Brass Tap in the Shops at Wiregrass starts its karaoke on Tuesday later than any of the other locales in our area (it usually starts at around 9:30), and it definitely attracts the youngest crowd. And, even though Torrie is the only near-millennial in our happy group, we always have a lot of fun singing at The Brass Tap. Keith even sang once â âTequilaâ by The Champs. (Look it up!)
Wednesday Night â OâBrienâs
OâBrienâs Irish Pub (see ad on pg. 35) is where Jannah and I first sang together and Iâve written before about karaoke jock Gary Carmichael of Heart & Soul Karaoke and our awesome crowd of fellow regulars at OâBrienâs, which also was where we first met Torrie and Keith.
One of those regulars is our friend Derrell Newell, also known as âElvis D,â a professional Elvis impersonator who also did a great Roy Orbison impression helping Jannah and me on âHandle With Careâ by the Traveling Wilburys.
We also were excited that a few of the folks from Quail Run met us at OâBrienâs â we assumed to watch Torrie again.
Thursday Night â The Basement
Even though it âonlyâ has beer and wine, we all agreed that we also always have fun at The Basement, where our friend Gary also runs the show â and Gary has probably the best âlegalâ list of karaoke songs to sing of any karaoke jock Iâve met.
We all agreed that this would be the earliest night for us of this now-too-long week of ruining our hearing, so that we could still make it to Friday intact. Once again, Torrie brought down the house with her current favorite karaoke tune â âKilling Me Softly With His Song,â the Roberta Flack hit from the 1970s that was redone with an almost reggae beat by the Fugees in 1996).
Friday Night â Bayscape Bistro at Heritage Isles Golf Club
The Bayscape Bistro at Heritage Isles Golf Club on Cross Creek Blvd. (near Morris Bridge Rd.) in New Tampa (see âGaryâs Favoritesâ on pages 31-35) is more than just one of my favorite new restaurants in our area.
Owners Eddie and Lourdes Bujarski, the couple who ran the Culinary Arts program at New Tampaâs Wharton High for nearly two decades, have a great little neighborhood restaurant and bar with a fun crowd of regulars.
We also were happy that we convinced our friend Ron, the OâBrienâs regular who first introduced us to Torrie and Keith, to come out to join us at Bayscape Bistro.
And, even though neither Torrie nor Jannah agreed to do the same, I decided that I was going to try to make it through the week without repeating even one song, just to challenge myself. And, judging by the 22 tunes on my âset listâ (right), I accomplished my goal, even though I have no idea why I would even try it.
So, there you have it…our five-day Karaokethon. It was a lot of fun, but would we ever do it again? âOh hell no,â we all agreed.
For those who have been waiting to find out where and when everyoneâs favorite Latin restaurant in New Tampa was going to reopen, Ramses Garcia, the owner/chef of Las Palmas Latin Grill, says that you should come check him at his new location, in the same plaza as Five Guys Burgers & Fries off County Line Rd. at Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd.
Ramses and his wife Ana promise that the new menu includes all of your old favorites from his former location in the Pebble Creek Collection, with even more authentic Cuban recipes for you to sample.
Of course, I had to try Ramsesâ mojo roast pork the day before he opened and I loved the new red beans served with his always moist, but with a crispy edge, roast pork.
Please tell Ramses and Ana that Gary at the New Tampa Neighborhood News sent you and please tell them how hard youâve been trying to find out about their new location.
The new Las Palmas Latin Grill is located at 6431 County Line Rd., Tampa. For more info, call (813) 907-1333 or search Las Palmas Cafe on Facebook.
 Hummingbird Jerk House is open!!
We told you months ago a new Jamaican restaurant was coming to the space formerly occupied by Dairy Queen, and it’s now officially open and you can’t miss the giant sign that says only âJamaican Cuisine,â but is actually for the Hummingbird Jerk House.
Located in North Palms Village on BBD (next to Oakleyâs Grille), the Hummingbird Jerk House offers a variety of authentic Jamaican delights.Â
There are daily lunch specials, jerk and curry chicken, oxtail and beef stew, curry goat and cow foot and butter beans, as well as seafood dishes, including Jamaica’s national dish of ackee and saltfish. A wide-ranging menu also includes deserts like Jamaican fruit cake and sweet potato pudding, as well as Jamaican beers and coffee.
Coming Soon: Smallcakes!
Do you have a sweet tooth? Doesnât everyone? The good news is that Smallcakes is coming to the Shoppes at The Pointe plaza in Tampa Palms, next to our friends at the Palms Pharmacy, between Koizi and Ciccio Cali.
The bad news is that this cupcakery (is that a word?), which has an existing location in Oldsmar, looks to still be more than a month from opening. Weâll keep you posted.
Checking Out Saltgrass Steakhouse & Main Event…In Orlando!!
With all of the restaurants and stores that have opened on the north side of S.R. 56 (across from the Tampa Premium Outlets), the eatery coming to our area that Iâm now most excited about is the Saltgrass Steakhouse, which recently broke ground on the south side of 56, between the outlet mall and I-75.
My son Jared and his wife Mary live in a new section of Orlando â also near a new outlet mall â which is home to many of the same restaurants we have, including Longhorn Steakhouse and others. But, the one that caught my eye was the sign for Saltgrass Steakhouse, which is the steakhouse chain under the Landryâs Seafood House umbrella.
Of all the restaurants in our area, price-wise, Saltgrass is probably closest to Stonewood Grill & Tavern in Tampa Palms, with most steaks at least $30. But, whether you choose a filet (Jannah and I split the huge 12-oz. version) or Jaredâs bone-in ribeye (at least 22 oz.), the Angus steaks are truly tender, well-seasoned and delicious. There are fresh veggies galore and the salad, bread and desserts are all top-notch, too.
Jared and Mary also live near International Dr., which is home to a Main Event entertainment center â which also is coming to the same area of S.R. 56 as Saltgrass. The feel is like a big Dave & Busterâs, with video games, a bar and cafe, but with really nice bowling alleys â and the food looked pretty decent, too. Jannah and I will have to go back and visit Main Event for dinner to tell you more about it, but Iâm certain it will become a major attractor for our area.
Also coming to that part of S.R. 56 is Rock & Brews, a scratch kitchen with a rock & roll theme. In addition to a nice-looking menu, Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley of the rock group KISS make appearances at every opening. Fun stuff.
I really enjoyed the grilled pork rice plate shown in the photo left, and, especially, the crisp, overstuffed chicken & veggie wegg rolls and sweet dipping sauce.
Meanwhile, in the same plaza as Chipotle, a little west of Mellow Mushroom, Blaze Pizza, our areaâs second fast-casual pizza place, has opened almost directly across S.R. 56 from MOD Pizza, its biggest competitor nationwide. Think: more tasty pizzas and salads, plus desserts.
WHEN I FIRST MET Venkat Reddy, the owner of Minerva Indian Restaurant (located in the Publix-anchored New Tampa Center plaza on Bruce B. Downs Blvd.), I told him up front that Minerva was probably never going to make my list of favorite restaurants in New Tampa because I really wasnât a big fan of Indian food or even most types of curry.
I also told him, however, that Iâve always been at least a little adventurous when it comes to food and that I would keep coming back to Minerva to sample as many of his (and his customersâ) favorite dishes as possible. Nearly three years later, Iâve sampled not only Minervaâs extensive and very reasonably priced buffet but also many of the specialties I probably would never have considered sampling when I was younger.
So, today, whether itâs because my taste buds have âgrown upâ or because Minervaâs authentic cuisine from every region of India is just that good, I really do enjoy visiting there â and not just because I also enjoy cutting the spice of the food with the truly delicious beers of India, including Taj Mahal, Hunter and others (Minerva also serves some good and popularly priced wines).
I always include an order of naan bread when I visit Minerva and my favorite had been the garlic naan, but on my most recent visit, I loved the savory butter naan (below, left) even more.
As for starters, I really enjoy the vegetable, lamb and chicken varieties of Minervaâs samosas, which are fried, well-spiced triangular-shaped appetizers.
But, my favorite appetizers are the vegetable spring rolls served with mint and tamarind dipping sauces, and the Minerva Special Soup, which is sort of a blend of traditional New York-style Chinese egg drop soup and my momâs homemade chicken soup. Itâs loaded with white meat chicken and a variety of fresh veggies.Â
I also really enjoyed the Minerva Special Chicken, which features delicious veggies with boneless chicken pieces in a sweet red curry tomato and basil sauce that has no bite at all. Another new favorite of mine is the goat curry, which is tender goat on the bone, again with a light curry sauce that was excellent when paired with the vegetable biryani (basmati rice) from the buffet.Â
Iâve also never sampled any of Minervaâs desserts, but they are very popular, too, especially the rice kheer (pudding) and the gulab jamun (milk-based balls in a sugar syrup).
Be adventurous…visit Minerva…and please tell Venkat I sent you!
Minerva Indian Restaurant (19050 BBD Blvd.) is open for lunch every day from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., and for dinner from 5 p.m.-10 p.m. For more info, call (813) 978-8586 or visit MinervaTampa.com.Â
Even though I know many of us are, like me, tired of mainly chain restaurants opening in our area, the fact is that all of the newcomers continue to expand our dining options in New Tampa and, especially, in Wesley Chapel â and that is good news.
Also encouraging is the fact that many of the later newcomers â and many of the chains already announced as still to come â are eateries that we at least havenât had in our area before.
For example, after my recent visit to Orlando, I am really excited about the Saltgrass Steakhouse (see page 40) that will open, hopefully before 2020, between the Tampa Premium Outlets and I-75, just as I was pretty pumped that both MOD Pizza (which opened n 2018) and Blaze Pizza (which opened earlier this year; again, see pages 40-41) coming to our area, even though there will never be anything better than true New York-style pizza at the top of my Favorite Pizza list. But, I am a fan of the new âfast casualâ pizza options â and I also like that MOD and Blaze both also have excellent make-your-own salad options.
There are some surprises on my list for 2018 and please realize that I got to wait until 2019 to make my choices (unlike our readers, who had to submit their surveys by November of last year), but I still have not included any restaurants on this list that were not yet open in 2018.
I will say that all of the new chain options did make it more difficult for me to pick just 50 favorite restaurants â I likely considered at least 100 different eateries between our two markets for this list. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed doing the research for it.
DEMPSEY’S STEAK HOUSE As it has been since it opened, the only problem with Dempseyâs Steak House at Saddlebrook Resort is that the average working guy canât afford to eat there, other than for a very special occasion. With its $40-$60 steaks and all a la carte pricing, I wouldnât eat at Dempseyâs at all, other than the fact that everything from the filet mignon to the bone-in ribeye steak (photo above) is as good as anywhere youâll find in Tampa â including Council Oak, Flemingâs and Charleyâs. The fresh seafood is equally impressive and thereâs no doubt that the crab cake appetizer and sides for two are unequaled.Â
STONEWOOD I feel like Iâve known Stonewoodâs Tampa Palms proprietor Dave Rathbun forever, but the bottom line is that this mini-chain is known for great food at fair, but certainly not bargain prices, and for outstanding service. Whether for lunch or dinner, dining at Stonewood (or even just enjoying food and beverages at the bar), is an experience, not just a meal. Is it worth $5-$10 more for Stonewoodâs aged New York strip or filet mignon than youâd pay at Longhorn or Outback? Iâd have to say yes. Recent menu changes, like the southern fried shrimp platter shown below (that I canât eat because of my accursed shellfish allergy) and reasonably priced bowls (like an excellent tuna poke bowl) for lunch have moved Stonewood up to my favorite restaurant in New Tampa.
4. LONGHORN Whenever Iâve compiled my list, I try to think of the places that I have visited the most and what I realize is that Jannah and I have spent a lot of time sharing food at the bar at Longhorn. Yes, itâs only a mile from where we live, but we love sharing Longhornâs Floâs filet and I feel the outlaw ribeye is a pretty good value. We also love the recent addition of cheesy baked cauliflower (you can get it that way for broccoli, too), as well as the salad, bread and the outstanding service at the bar.Â
5. BAHAMA BREEZE Bahama Breeze was fast becoming our favorite new restaurant last year when the Island Grille stopped having any âfresh catchâ other than swordfish on the menu. We recently got to enjoy a fresh mahi-mahi at Bahama Breeze, and I do really enjoy the Jamaican specialties, but additional steak (top sirloin or filet) and chicken options would help.Â
6. CICCIO’S Ciccio Cali continues to please with three yummy tuna âCali Bowlsâ on the menu, as well as the chicken and baby broccoli stir-fry, new spicy Brazilian bowl, wrap sandwiches and thin-crust pizzas. Other new menu items include two hummus appetizers, a vegan chopped salad and even the âimpossibleâ burger. Nice wine selection, too.Â
7. LITTLE ITALY’S Without additional new menu items added in 2018, Little Italyâs dropped a few spots on my list, but it still has the best veal parmigiana and lasagne in our area and their pizzas and calzones are back. A fresh fish special and some veggie sides would be welcome additions.
8. ACROPOLIS Acropolis continues to expand its menu with more authentic Greek and Middle Eastern dishes, but my favorites are still the lamb chops, the Athenian fish and the Greek salad. Acropolis would finish higher on my list if I loved the roasted veggies and other side dishes.
9. NOBLE CRUST When Noble Crust opened, I loved that there was usually a fresh fish special and I do still love the double-cut pork chop, chicken fried chicken parmigiana, pizzas and sides like broccolini, garlicky greens and crispy Brussels sprouts, plus the homemade desserts.
10. SUKHOTHAI Sukhothaiâs fresh sushi (especially the tuna tataki) and combination fried rice are still among my favorites in our area and I also love the crispy duck with ginger sauce, the new tuna sashimi poke bowl and the shoes-off, below-floor seating.Â
11. FORD’S GARAGE Despite another limited menu (unless you really love burgers), Jannah and I do crave the ahi tuna appetizer, chop-chop salad, chicken Henry and petite filet at Fordâs Garage, which also has good veggie side dishes and white cheddar mashed potatoes.Â
12. AMICI PIZZA Our readersâ new favorite pizza place definitely makes my top 5 for favorite New York-style âza, but what really helped the new location move up in my rankings were the authentic linguine with white clam sauce and tasty veal and eggplant parmigiana.
13. THAI RUBY The ambiance is second to none and the food never disappoints. I love Thai Rubyâs fresh fish specials and the crispy duck with ginger sauce is still the best in our area. This is a great place to start an intimate date night.
15. OMARI’S BAR & GRILL My favorite non-chain newcomer in New Tampa and Wesley Chapel, Omariâs menu will continue to grow as more folks make requests, but with super-fresh, chef-prepared dishes like the flounder almendrine pictured above, it is a definite must-try.
16. KOBE JAPANESE STEAKHOUSE Kobe already had the highest-quality hibachi steaks in our area, but Jannah and I also love it for its reasonably priced appetizers at the full-liquor bar.
17. LA PRIMA PIZZA Still my favorite New York-style pizza in our area and the Italian fare, like veal parmigiana and lasagne, also gets high marks.
18. THE FAT RABBIT The best blackened wings Iâve had, amazing salads and great sandwiches in a comfortable setting keep The Fat Rabbit in Tampa Palms high on my list. Â
19. 900 DEGREES WOODFIRED PIZZA One of my top-five New York-style pizza places, which also has the best penne with pesto Genovese in our area. Try adding fresh spinach and grilled chicken. Yum!
20. THE HUNGRY GREEK If you like getting great value for your money, youâre probably already one of the regulars at Hungry Greek, which features our areaâs best gyros and authentic Greek salads.
22. FUSHIA ASIAN BISTRO The menu continues to move towards more authentic Chinese fare, but I love Fushia for the best Chinese combination fried rice and beef with Chinese broccoli in our area.
23. OUTBACK STEAKHOUSE Jannah and I definitely enjoy the Victoriaâs filet and the Alice Springs chicken, and I do think the bone-in natural cut ribeye is a good value for the money.
24. SUSHI CAFE Up there with Sukhothai for the best sushi in our area, I also enjoy the soft shell crab appetizer, the kitchen-made hibachi fare and the tempura and ton katsu fried options.
25. OTB CAFE Not only has the new location on BBD in Wesey Chapel added some new menu items, the addition of real bacon for breakfast has upped OTBâs stock with me a lot.
26. FRATELLI’S PIZZA & CAFE This newcomer in the former Woodyâs location in the Wesley Chapel Village Market features very good pizza and excellent penne with broccoli rabe and sausage.
27. GINZA Our area has more than its fair share of value Japanese restaurants, but Ginzaâs Mongolian beef, sushi and appetizers are all-you-can-eat for $12.95 during the week.
28. VALLARTA’S Although some say the quality of the food isnât the highest, Jannah and I canât get enough of Vallartaâs chicken fajitas, which are better than the rest in our area.
29. HILTON GARDEN INN GARDEN GRILLE & BAR Itâs still pretty new, so I havenât sampled all of the menu for breakfast or dinner yet, but the Pan Asian ribs and NY strip steak are both enough to keep me coming back.Â
30. KOIZI Just a tad below Ginza for my tastes, I do enjoy the fact that the hibachi is cooked tableside and the even-lower-than-Ginza price of $10.95 for weekday lunch.
