IMG_5701I was a little sad that I wasn’t able to participate in the second annual “Cycling for Vets” event sponsored by the New Tampa Noon Rotary Club (which meets Wednesdays at noon at Café Olé on Cross Creek Blvd.)on March 21.

As a former charter member of the New Tampa Noon Rotary, I am still close friends with many of the club’s members and this publication was again one of the sponsors of the event, which was held at the Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. entrance to Flatwoods, with the staging area held in the nearby parking lot at Chili’s.

At last year’s inaugural ride, which again offered 4-, 18- and 39-mile options, there were 70 riders and more than $8,000 raised to benefit the club’s selected charities. This year’s event was down slightly from last year’s, with about 45 riders and almost $6,500 to benefit the Navy Seal Foundation, the Hillsborough Co. Fire Rescue Foundation, the Tampa Police Memorial Fund and Support the Troops.

“I think those are great numbers for the size of our club,” says Noon Rotary Board member and orthodontist Dr. Steven Dau, who provided these photos for us.

Among the riders this year was longtime New Tampa resident and former Stanley Cup-winning Tampa Bay Lightning captain Dave Andreychuk and the “Lightning” bike club, who were on hand to ride the 39-mile route.

For more info about the club and the event, or to make a donation, visit a club meeting at Café Olé or Facebook.com/NewTampaNoonRotary.
