Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to attend this year’s American Cancer Society (ACS) Relay for Life of Wesley Chapel on April 12, but I am happy to report about another outstanding Relay event, the ACS Relay for Life of Wiregrass, which was held two weeks after the Wesley Chapel Relay on Apr. 26.
Both events again raised thousands of dollars to benefit ACS and brought together a total of nearly 500 Relay-ers on 45 teams.
The Wiregrass event, chaired by Rebeca Rodriguez (top photo), raised nearly $12,200, while the more established Wesley Chapel Relay raised nearly $30,000.
Rodriguez was proud to welcome the top three finishers from the recent “Relay for Live” singing competition, which was held less at Quail Hollow Country Club than a week before the Wiregrass Relay and which also donated its proceeds to the Relay itself. A crowd of more than 200 people came out to support the singers at Quail Hollow and there were plenty of supporters for the singers on hand at the Wiregrass Relay as well.
The Survivor Speaker at the Wiregrass Relay was 13-year-old Shane Salyer (center), who was supposed to appear at the 2012 Wiregrass Relay before suffering a relapse. Shane said he was “so thankful” for his doctors, the 60 rounds of chemo he’s survived and for events like the Relay that help fund the ACS. “I’m really happy to be able to be here this year.”
