A Wesley Chapel man is in custody after striking a young bicyclist, eluding authorities and driving through the helicopter landing zone set up to transport the victim to a local hospital.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), on July 29, Nathan Wayne Young, 52, a resident of the Quail Run RV Park on Old Pasco Rd., was driving his 1998 Ford Expedition while under the influence of alcohol on U.S. 41, south of Painter Pl., near Spring Hill.
At the same time, 14-year-old William Machacek was riding his bicycle southbound along the east shoulder of U.S. 41 with his 15-year-old brother, when he was struck by Young’s vehicle, which was headed north. However, Young did not stop. Machacek’s brother was not injured in the incident.
FHP reports that a witness had been following Young, who was driving all over the road, and called in the accident to 9-1-1, along with Young’s license plate number. After calling in the incident, the witness returned to the scene to try to help. Not long after, Pasco County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) deputies arrived and the witness saw Young drive by, right through the helicopter landing zone set up to transport Machacek to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa.
After a brief pursuit, Young crashed into a tree and was taken into custody for fleeing the scene and eluding authorities, at which point a blood sample was taken. He was released, pending the results of his blood alcohol test, and was then arrested August 5 by FHP Troopers, when the test showed his blood alcohol content was 0.262 BAC (or more than three times the legal limit of 0.08 percent) for driving under the influence with serious bodily injury, as well as leaving the scene of a crash with serious bodily injury. Young was still in custody on a $110,000 bond at our press time..

Although I still hear a lot of the businesses we do business with say that they don’t see the economy recovering — at least not at any pace that’s helping them — based on the number of new businesses that keep opening in our area and the fact that those owners seem to have little or no trouble spending money with us to promote those businesses, I think there is some economic momentum being built in our community.

Thanks to a photo taken from surveillance footage, a man wanted for multiple ATM robberies during the Labor Day weekend is in custody and could be held responsible for additional, similar crimes, authorities say.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO), Charles Griffin, 34, of the Hidden Palms apartment complex, located just south of Tampa Palms on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd., was arrested on September 3 in connection with at least three separate ATM robberies, each of which occurred within a day of the previous.

The HCSO report states that at around 2 a.m. on September 3, Griffin, who was armed with a silver handgun, approached and attempted to rob a customer using the Bank of America ATM machine at 250 E. Bearss Ave. Hours earlier (on September 2 at around 1:35), Griffin had demanded money from a person at the same ATM, where his photo was caught using surveillance footage from the ATM machine. He drove off in a grey Dodge Journey SUV, which deputies spotted later that day, ultimately leading to his arrest. Griffin also has been charged in the ATM robbery of a customer at the Chase Bank at 2802 E. Fletcher Ave.
