If you love great food at very fair prices and you havenât yet visited the new Tarekâs CafĂ© & Grill, located actually at our former address in the Shoppes at Amberly plaza in Tampa Palms, it’s definitely worth a visit no matter which meal of the day you’re eating.
Although his restaurant is a newcomer to the Tampa Palms dining scene, Tarek is no stranger to a lot of New Tampa residents â his original Tarekâs CafĂ© has been a fixture on the University of South Floridaâs Tampa campus, just south of Fletcher Ave. off Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd., for 25 years.
âIâve actually been in this business 40 years,â says Tarek Elsayed, the owner of the two local Tarekâs CafĂ©s, which are two totally different types of places.
The USF CafĂ© is geared to busy college students and faculty members, but Tarek warns that it is still âmuch more than just a sandwich shop.â
Even so, the Tampa Palms Tarekâs is spacious, with room for 140-150 seats (thereâs a little more than 100 inside right now) and attractive wood booths.
But, the menu is significantly more geared towards the sit-down audience â local residents who want a truly delicious breakfast, lunch or dinner in a casual setting.
âWe have all of the local proms and graduations happening now,â Tarek says. âBring those parties over here. We want and can handle your group.â
Iâve only enjoyed breakfast at the Tampa Palms Tarekâs twice so far, but I didnât post a pic of my favorite breakfast to date â the cinnamon French toast with crusty white bread â because I didnât think my pics did it justice. Tarek says that virtually everyone who has tried his corned beef hash has raved about it.
âI hear itâs the best in this area…anywhere…all the time,â Tarek says proudly. âIf itâs not, Iâll finish it for you.â
As for lunch and dinner, my favorite dishes so far are the braised (âfor seven hours,â Tarek says) beef short ribs and
smashed potatoes, the âOoey-Gooey Ragoutâ (ask Tarek to describe it for you), the blackened (or grilled) grouper with buttery rice and perfect French-style green beans, the uniquely spicy Israeli-style couscous (available as a side), the turkey bacon cheeseburger, and the totally decadent, indescribable Oreo âballsâ covered with rich white chocolate. Theyâre like the chewiest, most delicious brownie bites ever.
I also love the mini-baklavas Tarek is holding in the picture above and he usually has other great desserts, too.
Thereâs no alcohol served at Tarekâs Cafe (15345 Amberly Dr.), but it is open Tues.-Sat., 7 a.m.-7 p.m., and 7 a.m.-3 p.m. on Sunday. Call 252-3238 or visit

ALTHOUGH MANY more people these days enjoy sushi than they did when I first started loving it in New York City in the 1980s, the biggest complaint I hear about most sushi places is that theyâre just too expensive to enjoy too often.
Although I also enjoy the clear and hot & spicy soups, my favorite appetizers on the all-you-can-eat menu include the truly delicious pan-fried dumplings, the Japanese-style green salad with ginger dressing, the super-crispy pork egg rolls and vegetable spring rolls and my surprise favorite, the chicken and vegetable tempura. The tempura green beans are better than any fried green bean appetizer youâll find at the average chain sports bar.
hat brings both heat and a little crunch to your mouth, and are served with a pretty good fried rice. Yum.
Do you crave great pasta living here in Wesley Chapel? I know I do. I can enjoy the pasta at most local pizza places, but youâd be making a big mistake if you were to confuse the made-to-order pasta at 900° Woodfired Pizza, which is located next to Orangetheory Fitness in the Shops at Wiregrass mall, with anyplace else.
One thing I love is how 900° Woodfired never oversauces the sizable, reasonably-priced portions of always-al-dentĂ© (without asking for it) pasta. Just as youâd find in authentic Italian restaurants from Naples to New York, the bowls glisten with whatâs left of the sauces, rather than leaving behind a whole bowlful of sauce. I love dipping, say, 900° Woodfiredâs homemade garlic knots, in flavorful sauces as much as the next guy, but pasta should never be swimming in sauce â or overcooked.
And, although no super-thin-crusted woodfired pizza will ever be my favorite, you have to appreciate the quality ingredients Steve and his happy, dedicated crew use to create these flash-baked pizzas.
s, baked lasagne, foccaccia bread and great antipasti (appetizers) like Il Gran Piatto, a big plate full of authentic Italian meats, plus fresh mozzarella, olives and roasted peppers. Thereâs also a fried ravioli appetizer, a zesty bruschetta, fried calamari, mozzarella sticks and even a great kidsâ menu. And yes, catering is definitely a specialty, too.
We were the first (or among the first) to tell you about the planned openings of Culverâs, Cheddars and Pollo Tropical in the Cypress Creek Town Center Development of Regional Impact (DRI), near the Tampa Premium Outlets (TPO) mall, but the news and rumors are still flying about other eateries that are on their way.
