Nibbles and Bytes: Bahama Breeze Opening Soon

A sign (see top photo on next page) on the building indicates that Bahama Breeze Island Grill, which is getting ready to open just east of Chuy’s Tex-Mex on the north side of S.R. 56, will open to the public on Monday, July 16. We’re trying to make sure we get an invite to the friends & family pre-opening, so look for a sneak peek on WCNT-tv before Bahama Breeze opens. Fresh seafood + live music one mile from where we live means Jannah and I will be frequenting Bahama Breeze…frequently.

•Also opening in July, next to Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt in the Shops at Wiregrass, is Nothing Bundt Cakes, which has been among the favorites at each of the last two Tastes of New Tampa & Wesley Chapel. At our press time, those amazingly moist bundt cakes with perfectly creamy icing still seemed to be weeks from being made or sold at this location, but a spokesperson for the store said “definitely in July.”

If you’ve still never tried Nothing Bundt Cakes, visit the N. Dale Mabry or another location before this store opens and have a couple of samples and please tell them the Wesley Chapel Neighborhood News sent you!  You’ll be waiting with baited buttercream breath for Nothing Bundt Cakes to open here, too.

•Not enough for you? Pomodoro Pizza, which is opening in the space previously occupied by Kwan Ming Bistro in the plaza on S.R. 56 that also is home to Wolf’s Den, also is expected to open in early- to mid-July.

Pomodoro is the first local pizzeria to admit that it has New Jersey-style pizza — which I’ve tried to tell quite a few New Tampa and Wesley Chapel residents over the years — is similar to, but slightly different (in most cases) from New York-style. I’ll let the Pomodoro owners give you their take on the differences, but new pizza is never a bad thing for me to try.

•And last, but not least, another newcomer to the same plaza as Mellow Mushroom on the north side of S.R. 56, across from the Tampa Premium Outlets, is Sweetea Café, which is still mostly a shell inside and doesn’t look like it could possibly be open before the end of July, but we’ll keep you posted.

We’ll also have updates on Earth Fare (which looks ready to go vertical), Mod Pizza (in the getting-much-closer-to-completion building next to Starbucks on S.R. 56, in front of Costco) and the three hotels set to open in the next next issue.

Have You Tried Bayscape Bistro?

I’m sure most residents of that community have heard that the restaurant at the Heritage Isles Golf & Country Club off Cross Creek Blvd. in New Tampa has changed hands again, following a $1.3-million investment by the Heritage Isles Community Development District (CDD) to revamp the club house and the restaurant that rarely has been much more than a place for hungry golfers to stop and have a sandwich and a cold beer.

No matter how nice the renovations may be, unless the CDD found the right operator for the restaurant — one that could attract people who don’t live in Heritage Isles to check it out — it was likely to fail again.

Well, not only is the new Bayscape Bistro & Bar at Heritage Isles significantly more attractive looking than anything else that has occupied the space before, some of you may recognize the name of the guy who owns and operates it — and who has provided a much more restaurant-like menu than any of his predecessors.

Edward Bujarski, who ran one of the first and most successful high school culinary arts programs in Hillsborough County at New Tampa’s Wharton High for 17 years, is genuinely excited to bring real, fresh food to Cross Creek Blvd. near Morris Bridge Rd. and to be able to hire some of his former students to work at Bayscape.

I first visited Bayscape few days before we went to press with this issue, but the Bayscape chef salad I started with combines greens, roasted chicken, mojo pork, cheddar and pepper jack cheeses, tomatoes, cucumbers and four crispy seasoned pieces of grilled toast that I assure you are better than any croutons you’ll have anywhere.

I also spoke with Cary Anderson of Streetfront Commercial Properties, who is now leasing out the space in the Shoppes of Amberly plaza in Tampa Palms, which does have a few vacancies, including the 6,400-square-foot space previously occupied by Casa Ramos Mexican Restaurant.

Anderson says he has been close to closing a deal for the space, but that he is still looking for “something special, like a sit-down Italian or seafood restaurant or even a great sandwich place for that Casa Ramos slot.”

Amici Pizza Reopens…And The Crowd Goes Wild!!

It took so long to open that many fans on the Wesley Chapel Community Facebook page of Amici Pizza — previously located in the Grand Oaks Square plaza on Wesley Chapel Blvd. in Lutz but which has been closed for a few months— was never going re-open in its new, freestanding building located less than a mile north of its old location.

Well, our Neighborhood News Facebook page and WCNT-tv — Wesley Chapel & New Tampa Television — were among the first to announce last month that brothers Vincent and Rick Mannino had finally reopened at 26602 Wesley Chapel Blvd./S.R. 54, also in Lutz.

The result of our announcement was one of our most popular Facebook posts and WCNT-tv videos of 2018 — with a reach of nearly 26,000 people, 15,000+ views on YouTube and Facebook and 1,600+ likes, loves, shares and comments.

Happy Amici patrons across the area were raving about the layout and look of the new place, the food (like the true NY-style meat pizza above; photo by Gavin Olsen) and about the return of a 16-year-old local favorite. We wish the Mannino brothers luck, but it doesn’t look like they’re going to need it. We also wish Rick’s wife Tracy much success in her also-new Salon Tré Anne hair salon which shares the building with Amici.

Congrats To The North Tampa Bay Chamber Of Commerce!
O.K., so it’s not called the Wesley Chapel Chamber anymore and the new office is located in Lutz, but May 10 was still a pretty big day for the recently renamed North Tampa Bay Chamber of Commerce, its CEO Hope Allen and her staff, Board of Directors and Ambassadors.
They and a total of about 200 Chamber members and guests were all on hand when Allen cut the ribbon at the Grand Opening of the Chamber’s new office at 1868 Highland Oaks Blvd., Suite A-1.

“This is such an amazing day for us,” Allen said, holding back tears. “Thank you for your continued support as we continue to support the businesses in our three-county area.”

It was as hot inside the Chamber’s new office — which also rents out suites to a number of tenants (who also had ribbon cuttings following the Chamber’s own scissors ceremony) — as it was outside, where the Wesley Chapel Rotary Club band “Strictly Business” played, there was great food provided by Chamber members like Culver’s and Chick-fil-A of Wesley Chapel, The Private Chef of Tampa, A Dash of Salt & Pepper, Fresh Healthy Café, Ava’s Lowcountry Cuisine, Tijuana Flats of WC, Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt, Prime 19 Events at Cheval, Top Shelf Sports Lounge (at Florida Hospital Center Ice), Catering by Vesh, CBK Catering & Events, Chuy’s Tex-Mex, Jersey Mike’s Subs, Brunchies (Lutz), Pinchers Crab Shack, Buttermilk Provisions and Craft Café & Coffee Shop and beer and wine from A Time for Wine.

Also attending were dignitaries like State Rep. Danny Burgess, Pasco County commissioners Mike Moore and Jack Mariano and Pasco’s comptroller and clerk of courts Dr. Paula O’Neil, all of whom were genuinely excited to share in the celebration.

And, since the new Chamber office also leases space to other businesses, those businesses also held ribbon-cutting ceremonies during the event, including Realtor Mollyana Ward and Lagoon Realty, Washington Woods Accounting, Furr & Wegman Architects and Rettig & Associates.

In addition to the Strictly Business band, Allen also thanked Acme on the Go, West Coast Rentals and her staff for their help in making the Grand Opening another smashing success.

La Prima Pizza Is For Sale!

If you love NY-style pizza as much as I do, you probably love La Prima Pizza, located next to the SuperTarget in the Northwoods Plaza.
If you’re interested in owning and/or operating a successful local restaurant, one of the few true NY-style pizza places in Wesley Chapel, you definitely should talk to La Prima owner (and my long-time friend) Willie Lopez and his Chef Dino, who are looking forward to retirement after 15 years of serving the Wesley Chapel community.

“It’s been an amazing run for us,” Lopez told me as I enjoyed yet another perfect slice from La Prima. “I believe there’s still tremendous growth opportunities here in an established, turnkey business. It just needs to be someone else’s business to make it happen.”

Checking Out The Basement

Speaking of pizza, I know that many of our readers are still anxiously awaiting the Grand Opening of the new location of Amici Pizza (and Salon Tres Anne) in a new, freestanding building located a quarter-mile north of the Grand Oaks plaza that Amici and the salon used to call home. Although the new building is getting close to completion, we still haven’t heard an opening date announced.

On the other hand, we have already visited The Basement Beer & Wine Bar (photo on next pg.), the new bar and entertainment venue which has been open in Amici’s former space in the Grand Oaks Plaza for a couple of months.

I wish that The Basement would have full liquor, but the place that husband-and-wife owners Jason and Ashley bill as “The Best ‘80s Bar in Tampa” does have a fun vibe and offers DJ dancing on weekend evenings, trivia and karaoke during the week (my buddy, Gary Carmichael of Heart & Soul Karaoke is there on Thursday evenings), a pool table and a great selection of craft and other beers, plus a variety of house wines.

Here & There, This & That…
• The latest word from a company spokesperson on Bahama Breeze Island Grill, which is getting ready to open just east of Chuy’s Tex-Mex on the north side of S.R. 56, is that the Wesley Chapel Bahama Breeze should open this summer, sometime in July. We’ll keep you posted when the company announces an actual opening date.

• And, for those who can’t get enough pizza, we also have not yet gotten word as to when the new Pomodoro Pizza will open in the same plaza on S.R. 56 as Wolf’s Den (in the space formerly occupied by Kwan Ming Bistro), but the new sign promises New Jersey-style pizza, which New Yorkers will agree is slightly different than New York style, but we’ll let you know more when Pomodoro opens.

• The new Burger King, which will be the first new business to open in the development known as Brightwork Crossing, just west of the Walgreens at the junction of S.R. 54, S.R. 56 and Wesley Chapel Blvd., is now hiring. The building is nearly complete and should open before the unnamed apartment complex in the same development, which now has multiple buildings coming out of the ground. We’ll keep you posted.

• I was sad to hear that the Ellen’s Hallmark store in the City Plaza at Tampa Palms shopping center has closed. A spokesperson for the store says that Publix, the plaza’s landlord, had raised the rent too high for the 20-year-old store to continue. The Ellen’s Hallmark store in the Shoppes at New Tampa (S.R. 56 at BBD) is still open. — GN

O’Brien’s Of Wesley Chapel For Food, Fun, Football, Entertainment & More!

How many restaurants have come and gone from the dining scene in New Tampa and Wesley Chapel? Too many (and too painful) to count is the easy answer.

So, whenever a new restaurant opens in our distribution areas, one of the first things I find myself asking myself is, “Do I really think this place can make it here?”

Well, in the case of O’Brien’s Irish Pub & Grill — which opened a few months ago in the location in the Wesley Chapel Village Market previously occupied by City Grill (and Winners before that) — I believe the answer is a resounding yes. O’Brien’s, which is more than just an Irish pub, more than just a sports bar and more than just an entertainment venue, is a reasonably priced real restaurant with both traditional sports bar food and some Irish fare you can’t get anywhere else in our area. Unfortunately, even though I’ve now sampled most of O’Brien’s menu, I’m just not happy with the pictures I have of the Irish dishes like the excellent fish & chips (I always order it with red cocktail sauce instead of the tartar sauce that is served with it), the Shepherd’s pie and the bangers (Irish sausage) and mashed potatoes with onions, mushrooms and O’Brien’s Guinness gravy.

OB_ChickenSammich2One of my favorite dishes is the Murphy’s chicken sandwich, which you can get grilled or blackened. It comes with crisp bacon, melted Swiss, lettuce, tomato and onions, a split-top bun and served with your choice of  homemade pub chips with Guinness gravy, pub fries or O’Brien’s soon-to-be-famous pub tots — which are the best tater tots I’ve had recently.

Our office orders our tots extra, extra crispy, but you might want to start slowly and just order them extra crispy the first time. Either way, they’re awesome.

I also really enjoy the pub club sandwich, which adds ham to the traditional turkey, bacon and cheese; both the Irish Cobb and traditional Greek salads, the prime rib and pub French dip sandwiches, the Rueben-like Emerald Isle sandwich piled high with your choice of corned beef or turkey with melted swiss, sauerkraut and Thousand Island dressing (I order the dressing on the side), and the flaky fisherman’s sandwich, which I usually order extra blackened (or try grilled or fried).

OB_ChzburgerTots2O’Brien’s also makes great hamburgers, from the no-frills Wesley Chapel burger to the Florentine burger with spinach and artichoke dip, blue cheese crumbles and bacon bits and the new shamrock burger, which is a grilled burger topped with corned beef and Swiss — and many more.

For starters, O’Brien’s has extra-crispy jumbo wings tossed in your choice of many different sauces, from Celtic tiger hot to sweet Thai chili to the new spicy honey sriracha. Also available are Cajun and jerk wings.

There’s also a couple of new starters on the menu, including the crispy Santa Fe chicken rolls, which are served  with a spicy remoulade dipping sauce.

For dessert, my favorite item is called the “chocolate bombe,” which is an amazing iced chocolate mousse cake. Decadent.

Some History & A Look Ahead

The first local O’Brien’s Irish Pub opened on N. Dale Mabry in Carrollwood 25 years ago, according to Mike Goodwin, who owns and operates the Wesley Chapel location with his brother Randy Goodwin and partners Randy Fairchild and Sean and Liz Lewis. Not really a chain, today there are four locations — each with its own tweaks of the basic menu — in Brandon, Northdale, Wesley Chapel and the Plant City location Mike Goodwin purchased three years ago. 

The Wesley Chapel O’Brien’s should be your pro and college football headquarters, with its recently revamped bar area serving a variety of craft beers on draft, and one of my favorite Irish whiskeys — Powers — always on hand (all at lower prices than you’ll find at most other local restaurants, especially at the mall), plus 26 big-screen TVs strategically situated around the place and food and drink specials during every game.

Speaking of specials, O’Brien’s has something different for you just about every day.

On Monday, regular burgers are just $6 and specialty burgers cost $8. Tuesday is Team Trivia night (7:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m.), with 60-cent wings all day, $8.99 Miller Light, Coors Light & Yuengling pitchers. Wednesday is Karaoke Night (starting at 8 p.m.) and Cheap Beer night ($2.50 domestic pints and $1 off imports), plus one kid 12 & under eats free with each adult meal purchased. Thursday is Ladies Night, 10 p.m.-close, where ladies pay only half their bar tab. There’s also $1 off Irish beers (like Smithwick’s) and $3 Fireball shots. And, there’s live music every Friday and Saturday night. Check the board inside O’Brien’s for the upcoming entertainment schedule.

O’Brien’s also is planning a week-long “Half Way to St. Patty’s Day” event the week of September 12-17. Call or stop in for details, but the partners agree it’ll be awesome.

Nibbles & Bytes: Costco, BJ’s & Longhorn All Getting Closer!

If it’s been more than a week or two since you visited the outlet mall area, you may not have seen that two more restaurants  in front of the new mall are going vertical, as BJ’s Brewhouse and Longhorn Steakhouse are both closer to having their separate buildings completed.

BJ’s, which is directly across Grand Cypress Dr. from Cheddar’s, is the closer of the two, although the construction process on both restaurants will go quickly now that the shells of the buildings themselves are nearly completed.

If you drive west and south behind Cheddar’s, Chick-fil-A and Culver’s on Sun Vista Dr., you’ll also notice that the site of the 152,626-sq.-ft. Costco also has been cleared and appears to be getting ready to go vertical shortly.

WingZone Offers Variety Of Flavors, And On July 29, All U Can Eat Wings

wingzone_buffalowingsWEBNot every restaurant we write about in these pages is a fancy, sit-down kind of place. In fact, we also are proud to promote places that cater to a different kind of crowd…in this case, a place that caters to the chicken wings, burgers and beer kind of crowd — especially for those looking for a new place after the recent closing of a nearby Beef O’Brady’s (the one on Cross Creek Blvd. at Morris Bridge Rd.; see page 47).

The good news is that the WingZone, located in the Publix-anchored New Tampa Center plaza (behind the Mobil station) is doing just fine here in New Tampa and owners Kyle and Toya Tucker do a great job of delivering this type of fare at very fair prices and my staff and I can highly recommend quite a few of the offerings.

New Appetizers?…

When we last reviewed WingZone in these pages in February 2015, we hadn’t really sampled any of the appetizers, but the mozzarella sticks, fried pickles and the new mac-n-cheese wedges all made more than one person on my staff happy.

wingzone_thaiwingzWEBBut of course, the most popular items at WingZone are still the wings, which are available boneless or “traditional” and with 15 different sauces available for smothering them  with (or for dipping). I usually prefer my wings naked (unbreaded) with no sauce and extra crispy, but I’ll admit I really liked the boneless wings with the only slightly (a two-pepper rating in WingZone’s sauce spice rating system) spicy Thai Chili sauce.

Assistant editor John Cotey says the two-pepper-rated Buffalo Bliss sauce had the same heat as the average “medium” sauce at other eateries and Kyle says both are among the top-five favorite sauces at his WingZone. The other favorites are the Honey (Bar-B)-Cue, the Garlic Parmesan and the new Blackened Voodoo dry rub, which added a lot of flavor to WingZone’s grilled chicken sandwich. The spiciest sauces available are still the four-pepper Nuclear Habañero and three-pepper Hot Shot, Tokyo Dragon and Mango Fire sauces (we had a lot of votes for the latter as a favorite). “Our Flavor Zone has a taste to please every palette,” Kyle says.

Still A Burger Man

WingZone also offers “Flavor Fuzed” burgers and grilled or fried chicken sandwiches, where you add shots of any of the 15 sauces, but give me that delicious grilled burger with bacon and American cheese and a side of potato wedges with nothing else but lettuce and tomato — and maybe, some crispy bacon. Yes, the burgers at WingZone will likely make my Top-10 list in New Tampa this year, as they are sizable (graphic artist Blake Beatty liked the 1/2-lb double stack shown above) and very flavorful without being overly salty. These are definitely not your basic fast food burgers.

wingzone_baconchzburgerWEBAnd, WingZone, which now has about 70 U.S. locations and nearly 20 locations everywhere from Russia to Saudi Arabia, has added some new burger options, including a mac-n-cheese burger, a make-your-own burger and favorites like the Lumberjack (with cinnamon, maple, bacon and cheese on Texas toast) and the Widowmaker (four patties, four slices of cheese and four pieces of bacon).

Other favorites on the WingZone menu include the hand-breaded fried chicken tenders (billing manager and WCNT-tv Wesley Chapel Chamber Featured Business Segment host Jill Reilly loved the tenders on her big Garden Salad). There’s also fried shrimp, which I still can’t sample, but I’ve heard people at WingZone say that you can’t beat 5 shrimp for just $3.99 or in a basket for just $5.99. Speaking of those baskets, I’ve already mentioned the crisp, yummy wedge fries, but I’m also partial to WingZone’s creamy (but not too creamy), sweet cole slaw.

And, whether you prefer to wash down your wings and/or burgers with a seasonal Yuengling or Miller Lite (or any of four or five other choices, WingZone has you covered. There also are wine coolers (but no glasses or bottles of wine) available, as well as sweet tea and fountain drinks.

Your National Wing Day & Football HQ

Don’t forget that Friday, July 29, is “National Wing Day,” when you can enjoy all-you-can-eat wings (boneless or original, served 20 at a time) at WingZone from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. (only) for just $17.99.

And, whether you prefer college or NFL football, both seasons are fast approaching and the WingZone should be your headquarters for tailgating at the game or for watching on your big screen TV at home.
