Nibbles & Bites: Johnny C’s Italian Kitchen To Open By May 1!

Former Saddlebrook Resort owner Thomas Dempsey, general manager Pat Ciaccio (photo, top right) and Erik and Seth Ravenna (all of whom were at Saddlebrook together before it was sold last year) have again joined forces to bring casual, contemporary Italian dining to the New Tampa area.

Johnny C’s Italian Eatery (located at 10970 Cross Creek Blvd., in the space previously occupied by Precinct Pizza; photo, top left), which is expected to open by Monday, May 1, will proudly serve New York-style pizza and authentic Italian pasta dishes and other specialties.

Featuring both indoor and covered outdoor seating, Johnny C’s, which was named for Ciaccio’s father, “Who spent his entire life (working) in restaurants,”

New Tampa Dining Updates On Zio’s, Kobe & The New Mpanitas

Here are some updates on some restaurants we told you a couple of issues ago were getting ready to open in New Tampa. Unfortunately, none of them are open yet, but all three should open sooner than later.

We did mention before that Macaw Latin Provision on Cross Creek Blvd. (in the same plaza as Saffron) was now not going to open at all. However, what we didn’t know at that time was that the second Tampa location (the other is on Palm River Rd.) of Mpanitas was getting ready to open in its place. Owners Genesis and Julio say the Venezuelan eatery will specialize in homemade mini-empanadas, plus mandocas (fried dough rings), tequenos (cheese sticks) and other Venezuelan specialties.

Also still not open yet is Zio’s New York Bagel & Deli Co., but owner Jeff Cofini says his NY-style bagel place and deli should be open for breakfast and lunch every day very soon — hopefully only a week or two after this issue reaches you. And finally, the new location of Kobé Japanese Steakhouse (photo) still isn’t open, but at least the sign has finally gone up on the building. The last update we had a couple of weeks ago was that it would be at least 3-6 more months before Kobe would reopen, but we’ll keep you posted. — GN

‘Fast & Furious’ Actor Sung Kang Visits Zukku-San!

Sung Kang, who appeared in “Fast & Furious” films (beginning with “Tokyo Drift”), was in Tampa for the 16th annual Gasparilla Film Festival to promote his directorial film debut, “Shaky Shivers.” While in town, he visited the Wesley Chapel Zukku-San. The Market Elaine Continues To Expand At The Grove!

Straight from the “How to Grow Something Special Out of Nearly Nothing” handbook, our congratulations go out to CEO Blair Valentine of The Market Culture, who organized and put on her first “Market Elaine” First Friday event at The Village at The Grove in October 2021 with little more than 20 crafters and vendors and an idea.

Less than a year and a half later, The Market Elaine, named for Blair’s paternal grandmother Dolaura Elaine, features more than 150 vendors, plus entertainment for kids and adults. The event held the First Friday of each month now attracts thousands of visitors to well beyond The Village area of The Grove. In fact, the vendors now reach south from The Village to The KRATE container park.

“This is so much fun,” a visitor walking her golden doodle named Janice told me. “I’ve found delicious baked goods for me, dog treats and toys for her and some great gifts for my family.”

And, even the existing brick-and-mortar businesses at The Grove say they now get a nice bounce from the Market Elaine.

Steve Falabella, who owns both the Falabella Family Bistro and 900º New York Pizza in The VIllage, says “We’re already packed every weekend at the Bistro,” Falabella says. “But, the Market Elaine has definitely attracted a lot of new faces and kept the pizza place hopping, too.”

Now Open: Gorkhali Kitchen & Nova Pizza!

So, even though I’m from New York and lived and/or worked in Manhattan for about 10 years, I never remembered seeing a Nepalese restaurant featuring the cuisine of Nepal, a small country located in the Himalayan mountains between China and India.

So, when I found out that Gorkhali Kitchen (named for a soldier from a certain region in Nepal), located at 10044 Cross Creek Blvd. in the Cross Creek Center plaza (in the former location of India Gate restaurant), was going to be the first Nepali restaurant to open in the entire Tampa Bay area, I had to check it out.

And, while the menu also features many dishes from India (including delicious tandoor oven lamb chops), I had to try at least one of the most authentic dishes from Nepal, the pan-fried chicken and veggie momo dumnplings (photo). Momos also are available steamed, deep-fried, in a soup broth and just with veggies. I also really enjoyed the Nepalese fried rice with egg, veggies and soy sauce.

Meanwhile, even though it didn’t open until the day after we went to press, Nova Pizza is now open in the Pebble Creek Collection at 19651 Bruce B. Downs Blvd., in the former location of both Windy City Pizza and Full Circle Pizza.

And, even though some folks aren’t happy that Nova Pizza doesn’t offer Chicago-style pizza, yours truly and others are thrilled it has NY-style ‘za and Italian fare. — GN

Nibs: Brazilian Steakhouse, Chicken Salad & More Pizza!

Another restaurant possibly heading in this direction is Rodizio Grill, a Brazilian steakhouse with five Florida locations, including Orlando and Sarasota.

Representatives of Rodizio Grill were scheduled for a pre-app meeting with Pasco County planners on July 5. According to a concept site plan filed with the county, the restaurant would be located off S.R. 56 on Sun Vista Dr., in front of the At Home store (and just south and across the road from Costco).

According to its website, Rodizio Grill was the first authentic Brazilian Steakhouse or “Churrascaria” in the U.S. when it was established in 1995 by Ivan Utrera.

The menu features rotisserie grilled beef, poultry and pork meats, glazed pineapple, a gourmet salad bar and authentic Brazilian side dishes, including feijoada (Brazilian black bean stew), couve (sauteed collared greens and bacon) and more.

Chicken Salad Chick Opening Delayed

The new Chicken Salad Chick, located on the Wesley Chapel Blvd. extension south of S.R. 56 (in a new building next to Zaxby’s), is delaying its Grand Opening, which was originally scheduled for July 20.

A new daye has not been announced.

The same building also will be home to a new nail salon. — GN

NY-Style Pizzeria To Replace Windy City!

A new NY-style pizzeria will be replacing Windy City Pizza (formerly Full Circle Pizza) in the Pebble Creek Collection in New Tampa, with a new name we can’t announce yet, but with some familiar faces running it. Stay tuned to our social media for further updates! — GN

Hana Sushi Won’t Open

We had been telling you for a few months that the former location of Aroy Thai on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. in New Tampa was going to become the second location of Hana Sushi, which has an existing restaurant in Sarasota.

Daniel Earles of SRE Real Estate, the agent for the strip plaza that also is home to Tire Choice and MedExpress Urgent Care, just south of County Line Rd., says that because of a partnership issue, Hana Sushi has pulled out of the 2,067-sq.-ft. location and notes that “it’s pretty much built out for a restaurant, so it would be almost a turnkey location for another restaurant owner.” For leasing info, call (813) 424-2500. — GN

Tessa’s Sweet Kafé To Replace Gu Wei!

We always love it when readers let us know when they see new businesses opening or getting ready to open, even if it’s before we’re able to get the information ourselves.

We’ve previously told you that the Gu Wei Noodle House, which didn’t stay open for very long in the former location of Sukhothai on Bruce B. Downs Blvd. at Galbraith Rd. (across from the AMC 20 movie theater), was closed permanently, but we didn’t yet have any idea of what was planned to move into that space until Josephine Quah Browne sent us the picture (far right) on one of our Facebook posts announcing that the new restaurant will be called Tessa’s Sweet Kafé, which (according to the sign and a couple of other posts on the “Tampa Bay Asian Foodies” Facebook page) will feature Korean Street Food, Binsgu (although some spell it Bingsoo, see near right photo) and other Korean desserts.

Unfortunately, we weren’t able to find out too much additional information about what the new restaurant will serve (although boba teas and Korean fried chicken were among the items mentioned) or when Tessa’s Sweet Kafé is expected to open, but of course, we plan to keep you posted! — GN

VR Galaxy Lounge Entertainment Venue Opens In Tampa Palms!

Talk about an idea whose time has come — the VR Galaxy Lounge has opened to rave online reviews (next to A Special Rose Florist) at 15355 Amberly Dr., in the Shoppes at Amberly plaza in Tampa Palms.

VR Galaxy Lounge is the brainchild of three long-time “gamers” who recognized that although virtual reality gaming is readily available on peoples’ home entertainment systems, there hasn’t been a place where those gamers could go out to enjoy the ever-growing selection of VR games.

According to VRGalaxyLounge.com, three guys named Joe, Larry and Tony grew up as gamers as far back as the original 1977 Atari 2600, and have all watched the industry evolve to where Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality experiences are becoming more and more mainstream.

“The VR industry is here and has unlimited potential. This is what drives the three of us…It is about becoming fully immersed in an experience whether that is traveling to Italy to see the Coliseum, swimming with sharks, traveling to space, meeting with co-workers or just hanging out with friends in a social environment…Our goal is to pass this experience on to all of you and bring you into the amazing and limitless world of VR.”

And, with its location in the same plaza with younger-skewing businesses like Peabody’s Billiards & Games, Crunch! Fitness and a variety of restaurants, Joe, Larry and Tony would seem to have a virtual hit on their hands.

Hungry Crab Juicy Seafood To Open!

Although we still do not have confirmation as to exactly when it will open — the last we heard was late April, but we had no further updates at our press time — there’s no doubt that a lot of progress has been made at the Hungry Crab Juicy Seafood & Bar (photo above) which is getting close to moving into the former location of Kobé Japanese Steakhouse in the Pebble Creek Collection.

Keep checking back on our “Neighborhood News” Facebook page for the latest updates, but it looks like New Tampa will soon have a place featuring giant Alaskan king crab legs and other seafood favorites! — GN
