House Redistricting Map Passes; Senate Map Getting Second Look

Off to the Florida Supreme Court the Senate Redistricting map goes yet again. After being by the Florida House, the newly redrawn (again) Senate Redistricting map will head to the Supreme Court for 30 days so that the justices can review and decide if the map is constitutional and does not violate any new anti-gerrymandering laws.

The Senate map was redrawn after the initial map was rejected by a 5-2 vote from the Court on March 9. A special 15-day legislative session, which began on March 14, was ordered so that the Senate could try to once again come up with a redistricting map that the Court would approve.

In the initial Supreme Court report, 32 of the 40 Senate Districts were approved, but eight specific districts needed to be redrawn.

The Court voted unanimously (7-0) on the last day of the 2012 Florida legislative session to pass the Florida House district maps. This means that, as previously reported in Neighborhood News, Wesley Chapel will be in House District 38, which is now an all-Pasco- County district. New Tampa is now entirely within House District 63, along with the University of South Florida (USF) area and Old Carrollwood.

“We are very pleased that (the Supreme Court) validated our maps,” says District 38 (previously District 61) Rep. Will Weatherford (R – Wesley Chapel), whose district had included some Hillsborough residents.

Florida House, Senate and U.S. Congressional District maps are redrawn every ten years, after the national census is conducted. Districts are redrawn according to population shifts in the census data. A November amendment to the Florida Constitution (the “Fair Districts Amendment”) requires districts to be drawn without regard to political parties.— Matt Wiley

Neighborhood Nibbles—Sushi Café Opens, Comedy At Peabody’s & More!

Skinny’s To Host A Special Event March 24!

Of course, there is life after St. Patrick’s Day in New Tampa and Wesley Chapel and one event, in particular, a week after the “Wearin’ o’ the green” should be very lively, indeed — on Saturday, March 24, at Skinny’s Sports Bar in the Pinebrook at The Grove plaza, just west of the S.R. 54 exit off of I-75, two exits north of Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd.

For more information about this unique (for our area) event, stop in at Skinny’s (27419-A S.R. 54) or call 994-4646!

Sushi Café Opens On BBD!

Although New Tampa already has any number of places for great sushi, there is a delicious newcomer located just a couple of miles south of the Pasco County line you should definitely check out — the new Sushi Café, which is located on BBD, next to Panera Bread, in The Walk at Highwoods Preserve plaza.

Sushi Café features awesome sushi and great New York-style Japanese cuisine in an intimate, elegant setting. We can already recommend several sushi rolls (the Monster, eel-and-octopus and soft shell crab rolls are among our favorites to date), as well as the hibachi-style fresh fish (izumidi; photo) with equally fresh veggies and an excellent Japanese-style fried rice.

Sushi Café (18015 Highwoods Preserve Pkwy.) is open every day for lunch and dinner. For more info, see the ads in this issue, call 977-7800 or visit SushiCafeTampa.com.

Open Mic Comedy Night At Peabody’s Palms Lounge!

So, you think you’re funny, do you? Here’s your chance to prove it at a venue that can be visited by all of your friends….if you dare.

And, if you do risk visiting the Palms Lounge next to Peabody’s in the Shoppes of Amberly plaza in Tampa Palms any upcoming Tuesday night (8 p.m.-9:30 p.m., with registration opening at 7:30), you’ll get at least five minutes or so in the spotlight at Peabody’s great new Open Mic Comedy Night, hosted by talented local comic J.B. Ball. We’ve been told that J.B. also has some friends worth checking out who also appear at these open calls.

You might also get to see a certain local newspaper publisher who has made several recent standup comedy appearances at the Tampa Improv and other area open mic events without being booed off the stage. Go figure.

You might also get to see my dear friend Susan Saiger. Suzi re-started her comedy career at local open mic opportunities and still both hosts and appears at open mics throughout the Bay area to try out new material for her solo act, as well as for her appearances with the Funny Divas standup troupe all across the state of Florida.

The Palms is an outstanding room with great acoustics and visibility and we hope to pack the place.

Remember, Peabody’s Open Mic events are definitely R-rated and not intended for anyone under the age of 18, even with parental supervision.

For more information, call Peabody’s (15333 Amberly Dr.) at 972-1725 or Ryan at 516-5142 or visit PeabodysBilliards.com.
