After months of mouth-watering construction, Chipotle Mexican Grill is now open in New Tampa in The Walk at Highwoods Preserve shopping plaza.

Open in the former location of the Bed Pros mattress store, Chipotle was tentatively scheduled to open toward the end of July, but officially sold its first burrito on August 3. One employee said that the first day was “absolutely crazy.” Considering the following the popular chain has grown in recent years, this comes as little surprise, especially considering its long absence from our area. For years, the closest location was on E. Fowler Ave., in front of University Mall.

The new, 2,500-sq.-ft. location employs between 25-35 people, with seating for 75.

The Mexican chain, known for its naturally-raised “Food with Integrity,” was started by CEO Steve Ells in Denver, CO, in 1993, and has grown to more than 1,600 locations nationwide (including 100 in Florida). Chipotle will bring more competition to— Moe’s Southwest Grill Tijuana Flats, its fellow nearby burrito bars in the Highwoods Preserve area.
