Hikers and bikers have to find alternative destinations for the next month, as the Flatwoods Park paved trail will be closed for repairs.

According to a press release from the Southwest Florida Water Management District (aka “Swiftmud”), as of April 22, the Flatwoods Park paved trail has been closed for construction while Swiftmud reshapes a levee on the north-south portion next to the trail, from the Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. entrance, where the trail turns east.

Swiftmud must repair the paved trail to meet standards set by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the release says. If the trail is not repaired, it could result in a loss of funding for the District in an emergency. The trail should only be closed for about a month.

The release says that although the paved trail will be closed, the shell maintenance road will stay open and a Swiftmud staff member will be on-site to provide information to visitors.
