Booster clubs are formed to help raise money for school clubs. However, funds recently raised at Freedom High (located on Commerce Park Blvd. in Tampa Palms), have been going to other uses.

TPD reports that Cornelius Smith, 40, of the Watergrass community of West Meadows in New Tampa, has been arrested for stealing money from the Freedom High Booster Club, of which he was the club’s treasurer. Smith reportedly withdrew more than $15,000 during an eight-day period in October from ATM machines. Surveillance video and photographs reportedly show Smith making the alleged transactions.

The TPD report states that when Smith was confronted by Booster Club Board members, he immediately resigned and was uncooperative with the investigation. Smith was arrested on October 14 at his home and charged with grand theft. He was released from the Hillsborough County Jail on Oct. 17 on a $10,000 bond.
