Opening on 138th Ave. Believed to be a sink hole, but determined to be a ruptured sewer pipe.

Sinkholes have been in the news more and more in recent weeks, and, at first, it looked as if one might have opened off Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd., just south of New Tampa.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO), around 5:30 p.m. on June 12, a hole opened up on westbound 138 Ave., just before Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. A Nissan Versa was stopped over the area that opened up, which has been measured to be six feet across and about 30 feet deep!

City of Tampa Wastewater crews investigated and determined that the opening in the road was not a sinkhole, but the result of a corroded sewer pipe that had opened up, allowing for water and soil to be sucked inside of it. Over time, a void developed under 138 Ave.

Crews will replace the pipe, but the roadway will not be reopened until at least June 24. No additional information was available at our press time.
