I remember very clearly the day Bella Brave general manager Tina Stormer called to tell me that my friend and former long-time Stonewood Grill & Tavern managing partner Dave Rathbun had passed away at the age of 69.
The first phone call I made immediately after I told Jannah was to current Stonewood Grill managing partner Dennis Diaz to ask him what, if anything, he planned to do in order to give all of Daveâs seemingly thousands of long- time customers and friends an opportunity to pay their respects and share their love for Dave.
Apparently, I wasnât alone. When I asked Dennis how many people had called to ask him the same question, he said âEverybody! But, I donât know his family or even how to get in touch with them.â
I didnât either, but I found Daveâs step-daughter Emily Barreira on Facebook and told her that although I knew Bella Brava â where Dave was working the last year+ â was planning a âCelebration of Lifeâ for him at the restaurant located off S.R. 54 near the Veterans Expy., I was concerned that most of his Stonewood customers would not be in attendance at that event.
So, I asked Emily to talk to her mom (and Daveâs truly beloved widow) Gina to see if it would be OK for me to put together a second Celebration of Life for Dave. She got back to me and said it would be fine to do that and that she and her mom would try to be there for it.
As we reported last issue, the Bella Brava event was an amazing recap of Daveâs too-short life, which also included his three brothers and two sisters and what seemed to be at least 300- 400 people â including a few of his New Tampa âpeeps.â Among those in attendance were Dennis Diaz and Stonewoodâs executive chef Danny Manzur. Together, we set the date for Stone- woodâs âIn Remembrance of Daveâ event for two weeks later â July 28 â which I announced on the front cover of our last New Tampa issue.
Although I was hoping to hold the event sometime after 5 p.m., Stonewood needed to hold it at 1 p.m., and although that time may have kept the attendance down somewhat, what took place was exactly what I had hoped for â a wonderful celebration of a deeply loved man, with great food provided mainly by Stonewood but also by some of the attendees and of course, great stories about a man they all knew and loved.
So, somewhere between 60-70 people came three hours before Stonewood opened on July 28. There was food and bar stools and booths filled with people, with some of the plaques, awards and photos Dave received over the years.
And, Emily and Gina were not only on-hand (they are in the top photo, with Stonewoodâs Danny Manzur, far left, and Dennis Diaz, far right, and several other of the restaurantâs employees who helped make the event a success), they also brought along the memory board that also was on display at the Bella Brava event.
The Neighborhood News sponsored the opening round of drinks and one of Daveâs long-time customers brought along a remembrance guest book that most of the people in attendance signed.
Everyone talked about how Dave always knew not just everyoneâs name, but where they preferred to sit, what food and drinks they usually had and more than a lit- tle info about each personâs job, family, etc.
âDave definitely had a gift,â said long-time customer and friend Debby Amon. âHe was just such a wonderful man.â
Many of those on hand at the Stonewood event knew Dave from when he worked at the Carrabbaâs Italian Grill on N. 56th St. in Temple Terrace before he helped open Stonewood.
Here are just a few excerpts from the âIn Loving Memory of Daveâ guest book. I honestly canât read all of the signatures, so I wonât include any of the signersâ names here â but you all know who you are and what you said:
âWe lost a truly remarkable man – someone whose presence lit up every room, every shift & every heart that walked into Stonewood. As GM, he wasnât just a leader, he was the heartbeat of the place. He had a gift for making everyone feel seen & valued – whether you were a longtime customer or a first-time visitor. He never met a stranger & he never let a day go by without a warm smile, a gentle hug, or a kind word. His employees adored him, not just for how he led, but for how he cared. He built a family, not just a team & that love ran deep. His joy was infectious, his heart was enormous & his legacy is etched into the lives of everyone lucky enough to know him. We will miss him dearly, but will carry his light forward. It was an honor to call him our friend.â
âI grew up in [the Rathbun familyâs] neighborhood. Every year when Iâd do the food drive, David was so wonderful & charitable. Always had a smile on his face & told us to come to Stonewood. He & his generous spirit will be missed.â
âWe experienced Daveâs kindness & generosity of spirit on many occasions. He has served as an example in our lives for what it means to live your faith with simplicity & authenticity. Dave had the heart of a true angel. All his employees always commented that he was the best boss they ever had & we know why.â
âDave was a man unlike anyone we have ever met. Truly special. He touched peopleâs lives in ways that left an everlasting impression.â
âDave was the dearest person we met upon relocating to Tampa. While we were new, Dave made us feel like old friends, or better yet FAMILY! And, to Daveâs family, thank you for sharing Dave with us!â
âDave trained my sister when she started as a waitress for Carrabbaâs. I saw him frequently through the Stonewood days & more recently played golf with him & learned of his transition to Bella Brava. You canât ask for a better guy or restaurant manager. His spiritual growth was very inspirational to me. We have been spiritual brothers since. You will be doing great things up there!â
âEmily & Gina – We loved Dave so much. From years ago at Stonewood to our long conversations in Publi to always visiting him at Bella Brava.â

Join Us When The Former Proprietor Also Will Be Celebrated At Stonewood Grill On Monday, July 28, 1 P.M.-???Â
Even though I had met David (âDaveâ) Rathbun when he managed the Carrabbaâs Italian Grill on N. 56th St. in Temple Terrace, I didnât really get to know him until 2002, when he opened the first Stonewood Grill & Tavern in the Tampa Bay area.
There werenât a lot of great restaurants in our area at that time â heck, there werenât a lot of restaurants, period â but Stonewood became New Tampaâs favorite restaurant pretty much from the day it opened and thereâs no doubt that Dave had as much to do with it as the restaurantâs steaks and seafood.
The way Dave seemed to remember everyoneâs name after one or, at the most, two times meeting them, the way he made sure his instant slew of regulars always got their favorite table or seat at the bar â literally everything about the guy was warm, funny and genuine. He was the very definition of the word âhospitableâ in the hospitality industry.
(L.-r.) Emily Barreira, Gina & Dave Rathbun (Photo provided by Emily Barreira)Â
I didnât know that Daveâs wife Gina was suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, better known to many as âLou Gehrigâs Diseaseâ) for the first several years she was stricken with it, and it wasnât because Dave didnât talk about Gina. It was because he constantly talked about how wonderful she was, what a great mom she was to her daughter (and Daveâs beloved stepdaughter) Emily and what a talented artist Gina was. The first time I found out Gina was ill was when Dave asked if I could publish an article about her in the paper to show some of her art, which I did and I wish I couldâve found the issue with that story before I went to press with this issue.
Now, mind you, Dave Rathbun never asked me to write anything about Stonewood. He literally had never asked me for anything until that day. And, for the first time ever, I saw pain behind his ever-present, infectious smile.
When Dave left Stonewood, a lot of people were heartbroken. There were some who told me that they couldnât keep going to their favorite place if Dave wasnât there anymore.
The next time I heard from Dave was in 2023, when he had accepted a position as a manager at Bella Brava New World Trattoria in The Hub at Bexley (off S.R. 54 in Lutz) , which opened a few months later. He introduced me to general manager Tina Stormer and made sure the Neighborhood News was on-hand for Bella Bravaâs âFriends & Familyâ pre-opening and introduced us to co-owner Thomas Sanborn, who was the original chef at Stonewood when Dave opened it.
Dave seemed to thrive in his new position at Bella Brava, but in April, he was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease that affects the kidneys. Suddenly, after years as Ginaâs primary caregiver, Dave was receiving dialysis treatments three days a week for several weeks.
In June, Dave decided to work a full shift at Bella Brava, even though Emily â who is a nurse with two degrees â was concerned that her stepdad wasnât fully recovered from his weeks of dialysis treatment. He just loved the work.Â
But, when Dave got home, he told the caregiver that he wasnât feeling well. He went to sleep…and never woke up.
At only age 69, the man who loved his wife for 28 years and had taken care of her for the last 17 years as she struggled with ALS, was gone.
Tiny quickly organized a Celebration of Life in Daveâs honor and memory on July 14 and an estimated crowd of 300-400 people showed up to hear his family and closest friends talk about what a wonderful husband, father, brother, friend and manager of people he was. Here are a few excerpts from the speeches given about Dave that day:
Daveâs stepdaughter Emily Barreira & her mom & Daveâs wife Gina Rathbun (Photos by Charmaine George)Â
Gina (Emily read a letter from her Mom to her husband Dave): âFrom the moment David came into our lives, he became a second father figure to Emily, loving her as if she were his own. He was endlessly dedicated and loyal not just to me, but to our whole family. He showed his love through his strength and unwavering support by always putting us first. David, you carried your confidence and kindness with you. Wherever you went, your compassion touched countless lives, and your love will always remain alive in the hearts of everyone who had the privilege to know you. But, you left me so fast and unexpectedly. I love you more than you will ever know, and I will miss your radiant smile everyday. Your love is the lasting legacy you left with me and your family. Your kindness was a true gift to everyone who had the chance to know you.â
Emily: âDavid always had a favorite story that he love to share. When I was four years old, I was sitting out in the living room with him watching TV. My mom came over and reminded me that it was time to go to bed. I looked up at her and said, âNo, mommy, I canât go to bed. Iâm watching baseball with my âlittle stepdaddy.â From that day on, thatâs what he was to me… my little step daddy. He instantly became my bonus dad at a very young age and supported me throughout the rest of my life.â
Daveâs brother Paul Rathbun
Paul (Daveâs brother): âWhen I was 16 years old, and we lived in Boston. David, John myself and Daveâs friend Tim took us to see the Trammps, a disco band in the seventies, and they were pretty hot at the time. There were a lot of problems with that evening, not the least of which was that four of us were under age. The five of us were invited on stage to sing the finale, âDisco Infernoâ with the group. It was amazing. Okay, it was the seventies. Dave loved his family, He loved the restaurant. He loved the people he worked with. He loved his customers. He just loved people.
âDave loved reading his devotionals. A recent one he shared was, âHeâs Preparing a Place for You.â Jesus promised that heâs preparing a place for us, a place where we will be with him forever. Itâs not the size of the room or how fancy it is. Itâs about being in his presence, where thereâs joy, peace and love that never ends. Dave, you have fought the good fight. You finished the race. You have kept the faith. Well done, my brother.â
Dave’s brother John Rathbun
John (Daveâs brother): âHe and I talked about the power of positive thinking â in the things you do, the things you say, the things you think â it all determines your destiny and the energy you give off to people. Dave greatly valued his family, connecting with his creator, and mentoring his coworkers. He loved his customers and obviously, his friends, and many of his customers became his friends.
âThe French have a phrase ââJoie de vivre,â which means âthe joy of life.â I think Dave possessed that. He put a lot of effort into his relationships with his coworkers and his customers. and he brought a lot of joy to you guys and, to be honest, you brought a lot of joy to him, too.â
Dave’s close family friend Tim
Tim (Daveâs long-time friend): âDave had gone to school for physical education but when he moved here, he was going to nursing school and he was working in an Italian restaurant (Lorenzoâs). And I would come down from Tennessee to visit and you could just tell that he loved it. I soon realized that he all the things that he could do as a P.E. teacher, he could do in the restaurant business.
âHe mentored so many people and was a great coach. He was so inspirational to so many people. Iâll never forget that we were working on a paint crew here in Florida. I was going to school, and Iâm borrowing money to go to school and I didnât know what I wanted to do. And I was really beating myself up and I had one conversation with Dave and he said to me, âTimmy, donât worry about it. Donât put so much pressure on yourself. Youâre smart, youâre a hard worker and people like you. Just focus on doing the best that you can every day and treat people around you the way you want to be treated, and youâll be successful.â
Daveâs friend Kelly Barnett
Kelly (another long-time friend): âI worked at the Olive Garden in New Tampa, right across the parking lot from Stonewood. Dave and I had worked together like 30 years before that, and we end up working right next to each other. So, one day I was eating there and Iâm just watching him.
âI knew what he was like, but I never got old to watch him work a dining room. He knows everybody by name. And he knows something about each of them. Itâs not like heâs just out there saying, âHey, howâs your dinner?â And the person I was with was also in the restaurant business. And they said, âOh my God, heâs like the Mayor of Stonewood!â
Bella Brava Bexley GM Tina Stormer (with Emily & her husband Ryan Barreira)
Tina (Bella Brava GM): We closed the restaurant today so all of our employees could be here to celebrate Dave. He was the definition of hospitality at its best. They called him âDiamond Daveâ for a reason. If he didnât know who you were when you walked in, he would definitely know you by the time you left.â
Please join us for a second Celebration of âDimond Daveâ Rathbunâs life on Monday, July 28, 1 p.m., at Stonewood Grill & Tavern.

Taxes. Death. Stonewood being chosen by our readers as New Tampaâs Favorite Restaurant.
(L.-r.) Tampa Palms location Executive Chef Greg Gonzalez, operating partner Denny Diaz and Corporate Chef Danny Manzur of Stonewood Grill & Tavern invite you to check out what has once again been voted as our readersâ Favorite Restaurant in New Tampa. When new dishes like the amazing Manhattan Strip Steak (below) keep being added to the menu, itâs easy to understand who Stonewood keeps winning. (Photos by Charmaine George)
Despite some changes in operating partners over the years, little else has changed at Stonewood. Since opening in 2002, it has consistently been voted the areaâs favorite, even in the face of some tough new challengers like Via Italia and the Grill at Morris Bridge.
This is the sixth straight year Stonewood has topped our survey results, and it has had many other top finishes in the years before that.
Manhattan Strip Steak
It still has a great bar, a superb wine selection and a menu featuring tasty items like cedar plank roasted salmon, sweet tea-brined pork chops, Tuscan chicken and other items you wonât find anywhere else in New Tampa â including the new Manhattan Strip Steak, created by Corporate Chef Danny Manzur, which we got to preview before this thick, tender and juicy strip was added to the regular menu on Jan. 4.
Its steaks are popular â in fact, Stonewood was the only restaurant in our survey to top two categories, thanks to it also winning Favorite Steak in New Tampa or Wesley Chapel.
With an upscale atmosphere that suits a family or that is perfect for date night, the Stonewood experience continues to be one enjoyed by many. â JC
In our most competitive category in our 2020 Survey, where the top five vote getters were separated by just a handful of votes, Treble Makers, one of the first new restaurants to open in The Village at The Grove shopping center, sneaked into the top spot as your favorite American eatery in either of our markets.
While that may seem a little surprising when you consider how many restaurants are now located in Wesley Chapel alone, itâs no surprise at all to anyone whoâs eaten there â especially if youâve enjoyed a delicious dinner and stayed for the dueling piano shows on the weekends or for the live music on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Chef Kevin Maggardâs menu will likely continue to grow and evolve over time, but he already has a lot of favorites from which to choose, including the unique coconut curry grouper and some of the tenderest, best-seasoned steaks in either of our distribution areas.Â
I also regularly rave about Treble Makersâ calamari, ahi tuna and diver scallops appetizers. â GN
The chicken wings at Bubba’s 33 are some of the best around.
2 — BUBBA’S 33 The surprise here isnât that Bubbaâs 33 finished #2 in this âFavorite Americanâ category, it was more that Bubbaâs only finished as your 17th favorite restaurant in WC despite its great menu and drink and food prices.
3 — BONEFISH GRILL Bonefish Grill is obviously one of the consistent favorites among our readers again this year, as it finished as both your third favorite restaurant in Wesley Chapel and third favorite American restaurant in New Tampa and Wesley Chapel.
4 — BAHAMA BREEZE Bahama Breeze Even though a good portion of its menu isnât necessarily âAmericanâ food, Bahama Breeze also was pretty consistent, finishing as your fifth favorite restaurant in WC and fourth favorite American restaurant in both of our markets.
5 — FAT RABBIT Fat Rabbit in Tampa Palms is a classic American joint. The bar serves ice cold beer, including its own craft brew, the burgers and wings are terrific and the super-crispy tater tots shouldnât be as good as they are.Â
The Next 10, in order of votes: Oakleyâs, GrillSmith, Ciccio Cali, BJâs Brewhouse, Stonewood, Mr. Dunderbakâs, Glory Days, Walk-Onâs, Cheddars, Fordâs Garage.
Stonewood Grill and Tavern once again tops publisher Gary Nager’s Top 25 list of restaurants in New Tampa.
Every year, after we report the results of our annual Reader Dining Survey & Contest, I always feel compelled to give you my dining favorites, including all of the restaurants that opened in (or very near) New Tampa and Wesley Chapel the previous year. Some of you love my opinions; others…not so much.
Even so, most people I meet out in our neck of the woods tell me they agree with my choices more than they do those of the readers year after year.
But, having waited until after the coronavirus outbreak hit home here in Florida to give you my list of favorites for 2019 surely didnât help matters any, as several of the eateries listed on pages 32-37 of this issue were closing, at least temporarily, rather than be open for takeout and delivery only, per Florida Gov. Ron De Santisâ order on Mar. 20.
Sadly, thereâs no doubt that some on this list may not be able to weather this storm and may close permanently. Until that happens, however, please support as many of the still-open eateries on my list as you can. I know Jannah and I will.
Iâm glad I got to sit down to a perfectly seared ahi tuna appetizer, a tender medium-rare filet, and a flavorful grouper piccata at my (and our readersâ) favorite restaurant in New Tampa â Stonewood Grill & Tavern in Tampa Palms â shortly before DeSantis gave his order.
As for the rest of my New Tampa top-25, please read on! â GN
1 — STONEWOOD 17050 Palm Pointe Dr., Tampa Palms | (813) 978-0388 Even though it hasnât always been my #1 favorite restaurant in New Tampa, thereâs no doubt that Stonewood Grill & Tavern in Tampa Palms has been near the top of my list since the day it opened nearly two decades ago.
New GM Matt Passardi â who previously ran the Grillsmith in the Shops at Wiregrass â and his staff usually also keep their guests happy at New Tampaâs most-happening bar scene, but of course, covid-19 has shut down the bar and Stonewoodâs elegant dine-in experience, at least for now. My suggestion? Get it to go while you can!
2 — THE FAT RABBIT 16029 Tampa Palms Blvd. | (813) 252-3004 The day The Fat Rabbit opened a few very short years ago, I was impressed with the look and feel of the place as a bar hangout, but I was thrilled when I sampled the food the first several times. Even though Iâm not so much a wing aficionado as I am a foodie, many in our area agree that The Fat Rabbit has the best wings anywhere Ââ blackened with a side of the Fat Rabbit cilantro sauce are my faves â as well as great burgers, âtatersâ (try the garlic sweet potato) and grown up grilled cheese. But, adding a Catch of the Week (blackened mahi-mahi above) moved the Rabbit way up on my list.
CICCIO CALI Shoppes at The Pointe 17004 Palm Pointe Dr. | (813) 975-1222 The Ciccio Restaurant Group has created one of the most successful slates of local eateries in the entire Tampa Bay area, with concepts like Green Lemon, Daily Eats, Ciccio Water and Better Byrd (look them all up), but Ciccio Cali has been the only one in our area since Lodge closed in the former Ciccio & Tonyâs location in City Plaza. But, I have always credited Ciccio Cali as the first to bring âbowl cultureâ to New Tampa. The menu has been simplified, with multiple âbowl styleâ options (the âLean & Cleanâ with tuna is my fave), plus crisp-crust pizza and famous wrap sandwiches (the Cali Club is my fave). Â
6 — BAYSCAPE BISTRO at Heritage Isles Golf Club 10630 Plantation Bay Dr. | (813) 994-3445 Former Wharton High culinary teachers Eddie and Lourdes Bujarski have created an impressive restaurant inside the Heritage Isles GC clubhouse. With a more extensive menu, Bayscape would finish even higher on my list, because itâs hard to beat for breakfast, lunch and dinner,. There are great wings, burgers, salads and sandwiches, but my faves are the dinner âsignaturesâ like country fried chicken and slow-roasted, top round roast beef with brown gravy pictured above. Itâs been a while since Jannah and I stopped in for dinner and Friday night karaoke, but the last time we were there during the week, the chef-made pasta bar was incredible.
7 — FUSHIA ASIAN BISTRO Shoppes at Amberly, Tampa Palms 15317 Amberly Dr. | (813) 903-6705 If you still havenât tried Fushia, youâve been missing one of New Tampaâs best-kept secrets. Fushia may not serve traditional New York-style Chinese food, but it features many dishes I love you wonât find anywhere else in our distribution areas. Iâm partial to the pan-fried pork dumplings, but Fushia has a large menu of dim sum (served 11 a.m.-3 p.m. only) appetizers, plus all-you-can-eat Chinese hot pot and Korean BBQ, but my faves are the yang chow fried rice, the spicy yan jian pork, dry pot chicken and the beef with Chinese broccoli shown above.
8 — THAI RUBY Shoppes at Amberly, Tampa Palms 15319 Amberly Dr. | (813) 558-0570 As Thai restaurants go, Thai Ruby is the most beautiful Thai place in New Tampa and also has the best food, especially since Sukhothai closed a couple of months ago. The spring rolls, ginger chicken, the spicy Thai combination fried rice (with chicken, beef and pork), the Siam chicken, filet of grouper and soft shell crab are all top-notch and Thai Ruby may have the largest selection of veggie dishes youâll find anywhere (I love the steamed broccoli with carrots, green beans and snow peas), but this is the place I go when I have a craving for crispy duck, whether its the tender roast duckling shown above or the âfancyâ duck with sweet & sour sauce. Â
9 — KOBE JAPANESE STEAKHOUSE Pebble Creek Collection 19601 Bruce B Downs Blvd. | (813) 994-6600 For those who crave the teppanyaki (hibachi) table experience in our area, you wonât find a better choice than Kobe. And, even though Jannah and I usually sit at the bar rather than share a table with families with young children, you get the same great meal, just without the show. Kobe definitely has the best-quality filet mignon, sirloin steak and chicken of any Japanese restaurant in our area, and you can even get pepper-crusted tuna tataki hibachi, as well as beautiful-looking surf-&-turf combos with lobster, shrimp and scallops that IÂ (sadly) am not able to enjoy. The sushi is really good, too.
11 — FULL CIRCLE PIZZA Pebble Creek Collection 19651 Bruce B. Downs Blvd. | (813) 994-3700 Donât get me wrong…even though I find the deep-dish, Chicago-style pizza shown above very tasty, Iâll never say I like it as much as the New York-style pizza I grew up with. And, even though I know that deep-dish and thin-crust Chicago pizza is a big reason why many locals love Full Circle, Iâm actually a much bigger fan of the other delicious menu items owner/chef Freddy Nova and his wife Julia have added since taking over the place in 2017. My favorites are the chicken and broccoli in garlic and oil and the meatball and chicken parmigiana subs.
14 — KOIZI ENDLESS HIBACHI & SUSHIÂ Shoppes at The Pointe 17012 Palm Pointe Dr. | (813) 971-1919 Anytime you get into a discussion with a local about which endless hibachi and sushi restaurant they prefer â Koizi or Ginza â things can get a little heated. Koizi is $1 less for adults for lunch ($11.95) and dinner ($18.95)and it actually does have teppanyaki tables (above), I just have long felt that the quality of most items, especially the appetizers, is better at Ginza. Even so, the hibachi filet mignon, New York strip steak and chicken are all pretty good and there is a great variety of sushi and sashimi available. The teriyaki and black pepper chicken are also pretty good options .
15 — WOODFIRED PIZZA Palms Connection 2822 E. Bearss Ave. | (813) 341-2900 The first woodfired pizza place to open in (or near) either of our distribution areas is known for its high-quality pizza ingredients, as well as owner Peter Taylorâs unique pizza names â like my favorite Pizza Raquel, which features house-made fresh mozzarella, fresh basil, grana padano cheese and olive oil, to which I usually add either pepperoni, fire-roasted sausage or Italian-style meatballs (Peterâs âcarnivoreâ pizza has all three) and fresh spinach. The wood-fired meatball appetizer and wings also are delicious, and Iâve yet to sample the wood oven petite (4-oz.) filet mignon, but the classic Caesar, Greek and iceberg wedge salads are excellent, too.
16 — LITTLE GREEK New Tampa Center 19022 Bruce B. Downs Blvd. | (813) 972-0707 Although itâs a completely different kind of eatery than Acropolis, Little Greek also has really good Greek food, as evidenced by the crowds that usually are in line (but always moving; great service!) during lunchtime. In addition to the only true gyro sandwiches (photo) and platters in New Tampa, this still-growing small chain (with around 30 locations in Florida and 50 total in six states), also features excellent steak, chicken, salmon and even lamb skewers, spanakopita, falafel, dolmades (stuffed grape leaves) and hummus and the only true Greek salad dressing in zip code 33647.
17 — SAKE HOUSE Shoppes at Amberly, Tampa Palms 15311 Amberly Dr. | (813) 977-3838 This unassuming little sushi bar and Japanese restaurant has previously been called Fongâs Sushi and Sushi Raw, but one thing has remained consistent through all of its incarnations â really good sushi (photo) and specialties like gyoza (pan-fried dumplings) filled with your choice of pork, chicken or shrimp, tempura (shrimp, chicken, beef, scallops, salmon, veggie or even tofu), and beef and chicken teriyaki. The seared tuna tataki appetizer is outstanding, and among my favorite rolls are the tuna trio (spicy tuna inside, red and white tuna on top) and the OZ roll, with fried grouper and spicy crabmeat.
18 — OAKLEY’S GRILLE 17631 Bruce B. Downs Blvd. | (813) 523-5075 Even though the restaurant hasnât been owned by anyone with the last name Oakley in a few years, current owner Luca Ammirati is a native Italian who has added a number of specialties from his homeland, starting with authentic fried meatballs served with the tomato sauce on the side. The last time I was in Oakleyâs, Ammirati had not yet added penne carbonara, lasagna or penne al ragu (meat sauce), but all three are now listed on his website, so I definitely need to stop in to try them. And of course, Oakleyâs still has my favorite bacon cheeseburger and crisp fries in New Tampa.
19 — ISLAND FIN POKE CO. 6417 E. County Line Rd. | (813) 575-8002 This newcomer, which was opened by former New Tampa residents Brenda and Jeff Sproat in late 2019, has established itself as the first Hawaiian-style create-your-own poke bowl place in New Tampa. I love the regular and spicy ahi tuna options as my protein (I usually do two scoops of spicy and one scoop of regular), and there are unique options like spam, octopus, shrimp and tofu, plus veggie options (like regular and spicy pickled veggies, edamame and corn), but as the Sproats say, the thing that sets Island Fin apart are the sauces. I really only need the OG and Island Fire marinating sauces…and an occasional Dole whip dessert.
20 — THAI LANNA & SUSHI Cross Creek Center 10022 Cross Creek Blvd. | (813) 991-0108 For those of you who donât live off of Cross Creek Blvd., Thai Lanna is another excellent (and pretty) Thai place that also really good appetizers like the Thai spring rolls, pan-fried dumplings (bottom right in the photo) fried calamari and even fried eggplant. There are three kinds of crispy duck, with the volcano duck (with mixed veggies and sweet chili sauce) being my favorite. Try the and crab fried rice! Thai Lanna also has really fresh sushi (cooked shrimp sushi and California roll are shown above), too.
21 — MR. DUNDERBAKâS Oak Ramble Plaza 14929 Bruce B. Downs Blvd. | (813) 977-4104 When the original Mr. Dunderbakâs was in the University Mall, I thought it was a cool place for German food, even though I really only had roast bee and pastrami sandwiches there. The location on BBD (which has been around the last 15-20 of its 45 years in business) has a much more diverse menu, and I really enjoy German dishes like the crispy jagerschnitzel (available in veal or pork, both are great) shown above, and the kassler rippchen (pork chops). Iâm not a big beer drinker, but Mr. Dâs biergarten has a huge selection and is always packed. Great European chocolate selection, too.
22 — PETRA MEDITERRANEAN 17503 Preserve Walk Ln. | (813) 898-8991 If youâve ever had a hankerinâ (as I sometimes do) for authentic beef shawarma hand-sliced off a rotating spit (photo), Petra is the place for you. The authentic Mediterranean/Middle Eastern menu includes a great sampler platter, which includes fried kibbe, falafel, hummus, babaganoush and grape leaves, served with a side of tahini sauce. I also really enjoy the nabulsi fried cheese appetizer, the tabouli, fattoush and Greek salads, as well as the chicken shawarma and chicken and shish (cubed lamb) kebab sandwiches and the Petra mixed grill with shish, kufta (ground lamb) and chicken kebabs.
24 — THE BRUNCHERY 17507 Preserve Walk Ln. | (813) 533-7271 For those of us who had been begging for a great breakfast place in New Tampa, owner Stanley Athanâs The Brunchery filled that void. And, even though I prefer fried eggs over easy with crispy bacon to the scrambled egg breakfast shown above, this was such a pretty picture we decided to use it instead. The Brunchery also serves a selection of âBenedictâ (poached egg) breakfasts, avocado toast, a lox (smoked salmon) platter, ultimate omelets and an incredible variety of French toast options. Iâm embarrassed to say Jannah and I havenât sampled it for lunch yet, but it offers burgers, sandwiches (including tuna and grilled chicken melts) and salads.
25 — TAMPA PALMS GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB 5811 Tampa Palms Blvd. | (813) 972-1991 There was a time, like when I first purchased the Neighborhood News 26 years ago, when this beautiful club, Boston Cooker and Hunterâs Green Country Club were the only ârealâ restaurants open for dinner in New Tampa. But of course, you usually had to be a member to dine at TPGCC, so I really only got to eat there when I attended New Tampa Rotary Club breakfast meetings on Friday mornings â and that club still meets there every week! However, I will say that the times when Iâve gotten to have dinner at TPGCC, the food has always been pretty good, like the filet shown above.
GARYâS NEXT 25 FAVES (in alphabetical order) All of these restaurants are very good, just not good enough (in my opinion) to make my Top-25 in New Tampa. Iâm even admitting to liking some âfast foodâ places.-GN

*- Notes – Mahana Fresh & Lima both didnât open until 2020, or they would have made this list.
** – Sukhothai, Vallartaâs (Tampa Palms), and Regina Margherita (previously called Chefs of Napoli) were all on this list before they all closed (with Regina Margherita closing the week we went to press with this issue) and El Pescador, which previously occupied Limaâs location in the New Tampa Center plaza, made my top-50 before it closed.
