fhpA Tampa woman is recovering from serious injuries sustained during a car crash on I-75 near Wesley Chapel.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), at 1:21 p.m. on May 18, Delaney M. Penn, 18, was traveling southbound in her 2004 Ford Mustang in the outside lane on I-75 north of S.R. 56. For unknown reasons, Penn lost control of her Mustang and traveled across the roadway onto the paved shoulder.

Once on the shoulder, FHP reports that Penn’s Mustang collided with a roadside sign, rotated, overturned and caught fire. Penn escaped with serious injuries. She was airlifted to St. Joseph’s hospital.

Penn was wearing a seatbelt and alcohol was determined to not be a factor in the crash. FHP reports that the crash closed portions of southbound I-75 until 3 p.m. Charges are pending.
