There have been only a handful of games so far in the high school football season, but it looks as if anything can still happen to our two local high school football teams, Wesley Chapel High (WCH) and Wiregrass Ranch High (WRH). To date, WCH has yet to lose a game and WRH has yet to win one, so it will be interesting to see which team can break its streak first.

The season started on September 2, when the WCH Wildcats took charge in their first game against their local rivals, the WRH Bulls. WCH senior quarterback Keegan Tannerthrew for 154 and added an impressive 102 yards rushing. In the end, WRH was beaten 20-6 in its home opener.

Since then, the ‘Cats have beaten St. Petersburg Catholic 26-14, as Tanner threw for nearly 300 yards and 2 TDs (including a screen pass to RB Sasha Mentor that went for 80 yards). Tanner’s brother Ty, WCH’s punter, threw for another score on a fake punt.

WCH coach Ben Alford says he feels confident that the team can keep its momentum into its upcoming Class 5A, District 6 games.

“We’re 2-0 (the ‘Cats had a Week 3 bye), so things are going good…really good,” said Alford. “We’re not going to change the way we’re playing. We’re going to play fast and smart.” WCH will get a big test in Game 4 at unbeaten Pasco on October 7.

Meanwhile, WRH has failed to score in its next two games, 36-0 to Sunlake High in Land O’Lakes and 53-0 to Pasco, to fall to 0-3, although the Bulls had yet to play a District 7A-7 game at our press time.

Upcoming Wesley Chapel High Home Schedule: October 14 vs. Ridgewood & October 20 vs. Hudson

Upcoming Wiregrass Ranch High Home Schedule: September 23 vs. Gaither, October 21 vs. Chamberlain & October 28 vs. Steinbrenner. — Sean Bowes.
