Winning the lottery is tough. In many the long run, it can be pretty expensive to finally come across that winning ticket. One Wesley Chapel man decided to try another method: just steal them.

According to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), on August 17, Matthew Benjamin McDanal, 19, of the Hampton Park community in Wesley Chapel on S.R, 54, was arrested and accused of stealing lottery tickets from his employer, the Radiant gas station located at S.R. 54 and Collier Pkwy. in Lutz.

PCSO reports that during a four-hour period during his shift on August 9, McDanal stole 325 scratch-off lottery tickets from a display in the store, throwing away the losing tickets. The report says that McDanal also printed five lottery tickets without paying for them. The total loss for the gas station reportedly came to $4,108.

McDanal was observed stealing the tickets on the store’s surveillance video and admitted after his arrest to stealing the tickets and cashing in the winning ones at other locations. He was charged with grand theft and released from the Pasco County Jail on a $2,000 bond the same day.
