The Metropolitan Ministries Donation Tent at St. James United Methodist Church on Bruce B. Downs Blvd. in Tampa Palms will accept food, gift, cash and other donations to help people in need between 10 a.m.-3 p.m. every day until Tuesday, December 21.Ā
For 20 years, St. James United Methodist Church in Tampa Palms has opened a satellite tent of Metropolitan Ministries to collect donations of food and toys for families whose struggles are magnified at this time of year.
The tent provides a convenient way for New Tampa residents to provide donations that directly impact people in the Tampa Bay area who would otherwise not have a holiday meal or gifts.
The tent officially opened this year on Nov. 5, in advance of Thanksgiving, with a ceremony led by St. Jamesā Lead Pastor, Tony Fotsch. It closed between Thanksgiving and Dec. 3, and is now open to accept donations every day, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., through Tuesday, December 21.
āWhile the tent is primarily a way to give to those in our community who benefit from the donations of food and toys,ā says Pastor Fotsch, āwe often hear from our volunteers that it is a blessing for them to be a part of this, and we believe that those who provide the generous gifts are positively affected, as well.ā
The tent makes it easy for locals to drive through the parking lot and simply drop off any goods they would like to donate, without ever leaving their cars.
Unwrapped toys for any kids, ages newborn to 18, are gratefully accepted. Items for teenagers are especially needed. For gift ideas, visit metro-min.org/holiday-central.Ā
Food items also are needed to make a complete āBox of Hope.ā A complete box includes turkey, ham or chicken, cereal, canned yams, bagged or boxed stuffing, cranberry sauce, bagged or canned beans, soup, rice, boxed or canned potatoes, boxed macaroni & cheese, gravy packet or cans, dessert mix, canned fruit and canned vegetables.
People can drop off any or all items on the list at the tent, where volunteers sort donations into a complete box that is prepared for a family to enjoy for Christmas (since Thanksgiving is now over).
Volunteers also are needed to accept donations, sort them and load them up to be delivered to the main Metropolitan Ministries tent in downtown Tampa, where families who have been referred from agencies who help those in need come to pick up the food and choose gifts for their children.
Gift cards and cash donations also are graciously accepted.
Last year alone, the New Tampa tent at St. James Church collected a total of 507 turkeys and hams, plus an additional 19,459 pounds of food, to make 989 āBoxes of Hope.ā It also received 2,171 toys and $645 in gift cards.
āItās a testament to our community that people give so generously,ā says Pastor Fotsch.
At the church, Melissa Ewen, who serves as director of fellowship and special connections, coordinates the New Tampa tent logistics and serves as St. Jamesā liaison to Metropolitan Ministries.
āWe are thrilled to continue our long-standing partnership with Metro Ministries,ā says Ewen, who explains that it fits with the churchās mission to serve the spiritual, emotional and social needs of its members and the greater Tampa area, including its vulnerable populations. āWeāre so grateful for this opportunity to come together to make a difference in our community during this holiday season.ā
For more information about how to donate or volunteer, please contact the church by emailing info@stjamestampa.org or visit StJamesTampa.org.state.Ā

Florida Advanced Spine and Orthopedics (FASTMD) is a leading orthopedic practice with five locations throughout Tampa Bay. The Wesley Chapel office, located in the Cypress Ridge Professional Park on the north side of S.R. 56, is led by orthopedists Jonas Santos, D.O., and Andrew Corbett, D.O.
FASTMDās comprehensive spine and general orthopedic services include minimally invasive spine surgery, injections, sports medicine and general orthopedics of the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, neck, knee and ankle. The doctors can help patients suffering from back pain, arthritis, tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, herniated discs and dislocations/subluxations, among many other concerns. This breadth of offerings positions the practice as a one-stop solution for all of your musculoskeletal issues.
Dr. Santos is a Board-certified and fellowship-trained Interventional Pain Physician specializing in minimally invasive procedures and interventional injections. He earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) degree from the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Bradenton. He continued his medical training at the University of South Florida (USF) Morsani College of Medicine, where he completed his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, including rotations at Tampa General Hospital and the Moffitt Cancer Center. He served as Chief Resident during his residency. Following his residency, Dr. Santos pursued a Fellowship in Interventional Pain Medicine at USF, where he gained expertise in interventional procedures for pain relief.
These days, Dr. Santos also teaches residents and fellows at the USF Health Residency and Fellowship Programs, where he stays up-to-date with current research and effective treatments for the spine and orthopedics.
āI wanted to specialize in the field of spine and orthopedics because I feel that when it comes to surgical options, patients are understandably apprehensive about having to undergo surgery.ā
He adds that he aims to emphasize that many conservative treatments and minimally invasive options are available before just going straight to surgery.
āThis misconception is something that I really wanted to educate our community about,ā he says. āWe promote trying to treat patients conservatively.ā
While he acknowledges that some situations do require surgical interventions, he is cognizant of putting patients at ease when entering a surgical practice office. The doctors work collaboratively with patients to develop treatment plans tailored to their specific situations to avoid surgery anytime it is not essential.
Dr. Santos offers injections that can help with pain in a patientās spine, neck, shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, and hand. For issues with feet and ankles, however, he refers patients to a podiatrist.
He stresses that early intervention is imperative, as the longer the damaged nerves and discs exist, the greater the likelihood that chronic pain will increase.
āSome of the most gratifying aspects of what I do is seeing the relief on a patientās face when we tell them there are other minimally invasive options ā like injection therapies ā that can help a lot of back and nerve-related pain,ā he says. āAfter we are able to proceed with those interventions ā and some patients feel almost instantaneous relief that theyāve been suffering with for usually several months ā it is quite rewarding.āĀ
Dr. Andrew Corbett goes over a patientās chart with the patient.Ā
Dr. Andrew Corbett, a recent addition to the FASTMD practice, also earned his D.O. degree from the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Bradenton. He completed his Adult Deformity and Spinal Reconstruction Surgery Fellowship at the Sonoran Spine Center in Tempe, AZ, following his Orthopedic Surgery residency at the USF Morsani College of Medicine.
Dr. Corbett says he was inspired to follow the path into orthopedics due to a personal experience with a sports injury he sustained in high school and college.
When surgical intervention for a patientās spine is required, Dr. Corbett utilizes a MEND (Minimally-Invasive Endoscopic Discectomy) procedure, which is done by utilizing small cameras similar to laparoscopic surgery, allowing the removal of painful disc material, clearing out bone spurs and arthritis through a small camera less than an eighth of an inch wide. This process enables Dr. Corbett to access the painful area of the patientās spine without damaging the surrounding tissues.
āThe recovery is much quicker and, in most cases, less painful,ā Dr. Corbett says, āand allows you to get to your rehabilitation and physical therapy much quicker than the larger incisions used in traditional surgeries. While certain indications do still require larger surgery, we try to offer the minimally-invasive offer whenever it is appropriate.ā
Like Dr. Santos, Dr. Corbett finds that the most rewarding aspect of the practice is being able to alleviate a patientās pain after surgery and āwatching them return to an active lifestyle.ā
Speaking Of Lifestyle…
Both doctors stress the significance of maintaining a healthy diet, regular physical activity and paying attention to cardiovascular health and core strength to all of their patients. They believe in stretching, proper weightlifting techniques, ergonomic practices, and postural awareness to prevent joint issues.
āMaintaining a healthy diet is number one to keep the pressure off your spine,ā Dr. Corbett says. āMaintaining physical activity, at least 30 minutes aĀ day, and paying attention to cardiovascular health, as well as core strength (also are important).āĀ
Dr. Santos agrees and adds that proper diet and exercise allow your body to āessentially use all of the muscles, ligaments and joints harmoniously, so none of those systems is taking on the load and undergoing degeneration.ā
The doctors share an unwavering commitment to providing patients with the best possible care. At the practiceās Trinity location, FASTMD has a very rare FDA-approved Stem Cell Lab where the doctors can harvest stem cells from patients and store them for the patientās possible future needs.Ā
āThis way, if they need surgery in the future, we can use those stem cells to help the healing process,ā Dr. Santos says. ā(Stem cells) can be used for a herniated disc once removed and the fusion of certain joints that need to be fused using the patientās stem cells. We also can harvest them to treat rotator cuff injuries, arthritis and tendonitis of other joints in the body, as well.ā
In mid-November, a Board-certified general orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Ryan Ouillette, will join the practice. He attended Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, MI, and completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch Hospital. Dr. Ouillette furthered his specialization with a fellowship in orthopedic sports medicine at Beaumont Hospital in Michigan.
Dr. Ouillette will perform all extensive and minor orthopedic surgeries, excluding spinal procedures, which will expand the practiceās capabilities for a broader full-service range of surgical options. This exciting addition further underscores FASTMDās commitment to offering the Wesley Chapel community comprehensive orthopedic care.
Outside the practice, Dr. Santos enjoys basketball, football, and fishing. He is the proud father of an eight-year-old son and resides in Wesley Chapel with his wife and two Pomeranians, Becky and Gg. Dr. Corbett, who has been happily married for a year and a half, is excitedly anticipating the arrival of his first child, a baby girl. He enjoys spending quality time at the pool with family and friends and loves playtime with his three-year-old mini Goldendoodle, Leo. Both doctors also share a love of fishing.
As FASTMD continues to grow and evolve, patients can rest assured that their musculoskeletal health needs will be met with the highest standard of care and expertise, whether through non-surgical, minimally invasive interventions or surgical solutions when necessary. The practiceās dedication to each patientās well-being remains unwavering, and it is poised to continue making a significantĀ impact in orthopedics for years to come.Ā
Florida Advanced Spine & Orthopedicsā Wesley Chapel office is located at 2309 Crestover Lane and is open Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. For appointments and more information, call 855-3FASTMD, visit FASTMD.com.
The Grill At Morris Bridge, Cali Tampa Palms & The Fat RabbitPub Round Out The Top 5!
(Above) The quality of long-standing favorites like its bruschetta appetizer, plus it always-outstanding service, has kept Stonewood Grill & Tavern as our readersā Favorite Restaurant in New Tampa for eight consecutive years.
When our 2022 Dining Survey asked our readers to name their Favorite Restaurants in New Tampa or Wesley Chapel, Stonewood Grill & Tavern finished fourth in that overall voting (behind three restaurants based in or near Wesley Chapel), but still finished as the New Tampa restaurant our readers liked best. That means that with its win again this year, the mini-chain (with fewer than ten Tampa Bay-area locations), has won the title of our readersā Favorite Restaurant in New Tampa for each of the last eight years, after finishing as our readersā second Favorite in New Tampa in 2015.
Thereās no doubt that Stonewoodās long history in the same location and its never-wavering commitment to quality food and outstanding service has kept it at #1 with our readers for nearly a decade.
(Above) The pasta Bolognese at Via Italia Wood Fired Pizza & Bar is one reason the restaurant has risen in the rankings with our readers every year since it first opened in 2020.
2. Via Italia Wood FiredPizza & Bar
8644 Hunterās Village Rd., Village at Hunterās Lake
In one of the closer votes in recent memory in New Tampa, Via Italia narrowly trailed Stonewood with our readers in this yearās voting. Since it first opened in 2020, owner Roberto Maganucoās quality pizza and pasta restaurant and bar has improved its finish with our readers every year ā from 9th in 2020, to 4th in 2021, 3rd in 2022 and now 2nd in New Tampa for 2023.
Via Italia offers more different styles of pizza than youāll find anywhere else, and its many varieties of authentic Italian pastas keeps helping it add new fans.
(Above) The seafood risotto at The Grill at Morris Bridge includes shrimp, scallops, lobster and a lobster cream sauce. The Grill has finished in the top-three with our readers in both 2022 and 2023.
Because it opened as the reader voting was already ending in late 2021, The Grill at Morris Bridge finished as the second Favorite Restaurant in New Tampa last year and third in this yearās voting.
Owners and brothers Frank and Jimmy Gouveia added our areaās only true tomahawk ribeye steak to The Grillās already impressive menu, which also features outstanding fresh fish and seafood and the Gouveias have constantly evaluated and improved the menu since it opened.
The Grill also features New Tampaās most extensive wine list and excellent service.
Cali, the mini-chain previously called Ciccio & Tonyās and then Ciccio Cali, has finished as high as 2nd Favorite in New Tampa with our readers more than once, but the restaurant that first brought ābowl cultureā to New Tampa also has somehow ā and somewhat surprisingly ā missed the top-25 a couple of times (including last year) after finishing 7th in 2021.
Having finished as high as 4th with our readers, and also being the runaway winner as Favorite Bar in New Tampa & Wesley Chapel this year (see pg. 36), the Fat Rabbit has been a pretty consistent favorite for its crispy, delicious wings, great burgers, sandwiches, salads, hot dogs, a wide variety of crispy tater tots and other bar favorites, along with a great āvibe.ā
Another consistent favorite with our readers, Liangās was 4th Favorite in New Tampa last year, 3rd in 2021, 5th in 2020, 3rd in 2019, 3rd in 2018 and…well, you get the idea. Liangās Asian fusion cuisine also has kept it atop our Favorite Asian Restaurant in New Tampa and Wesley Chapel reader rankings pretty much every year it has been open ā and repeated that win again this year.
Fresh Kitchen has elevated the fast-casual bowl concept to both a science and an art form, as even the sometimes long lines (especially at lunch time) never really slow you down and the options are all delicious and definitely offers healthy options.
The Florida-based chain, now with 12 locations, has only been open here since 2021, but it finished as the 10th Favorite in New Tampa with our readers that year and was up to 9th Favorite last year and has now jumped up to 7th for 2023.
Although it mysteriously disappeared from last yearās top-25 with our readers, Mr. Dunderbakās and its German cuisine has otherwise been super-consistent ā 2nd in 2021, 3rd in 2020 and 4th in 2019.
Also known for its huge selection of beers, Mr. Dās is Tampaās āGerman Bierhalle, Braueri, Marketplatz und Restaurantā
This is the one restaurant that has ranked with our readers nearly every year that I simply donāt understand, other than for its value. Even with its unlimited salad (which I do like) and breadsticks, I have never been a fan.
Although Olive Garden missed our readersā top-25 in New Tampa last year, it finished 23rd in 2021 and 14th in 2020.
Not only is this Minervaās first-ever top-10 finish with our readers, Iām pretty sure itās the first Indian restaurant to ever crack the readersā top-10.
Known for its huge lunch buffet and dishes from every region in India, Minerva has won āFavorite Indian Restaurant in New Tampa & Wesley Chapelā before, but this was a major rise in its overall rank.

District 7 Tampa City Councilman Luis Viera says that, āBefore last year, New Tampa never had its own (city-hosted) Christmas tree event. Last year, I sought to have both a Christmas and Hanukkah event on the same day.ā This year, the city held its Christmas tree lighting on Nov. 27 and is hosting a Hanukkah event on Monday, December 11, 6:30 p.m., also at the New Tampa Recreation Center (17302 Commerce Park Blvd.).
āThis is all part of the efforts I have been undertaking since 2016 to continue to have an increased connection between our city government and New Tampa,ā Viera says. āIt is important that we get the same dignity and respect as all other parts of the city have.ā
At the Christmas event (l.-r. in photo, above), State Rep. Fentrice Driskell, Viera and his fellow City Council member Lynn Hurtak, Heather Erickson and Tony Mulkey of the Tampa Parks & Rec Dept. and Tampa Palms resident and the eventās M.C. Tracy Falkowitz were all on hand for the Christmas tree lighting and festivities (photos below).
As for the Hanukkah event on Dec. 11, itās entirely possible that some of you may not receive this issue ā or may not read it that quickly, even if you do receive it on time ā before that event is held, but Viera says that he wants to make sure that people know his #1 concern for that event is public safety.
āWe are looking forward to a wonderful celebration of this holiday and hearing from community members on what Hanukkah means to them at this time,ā Viera says. āI am acutely aware of the sentiments and feelings of our American Jewish brothers and sisters in this time of increased and immoral anti-Semitism, so we will have security on hand for this event.ā
Dax (left) & Drew McLochlin invite you to visit Macās Custom Meats + Deli (store photo below) in the Grand Oaks Plaza on WC Blvd. in Lutz. (Photos by Charmaine George & Dax McLochlin)Ā
When Daxton (Dax) McLochlin and his brother Drew were kids, they used to stay at their Grandpaās condo in the Saddlebrook Resort community when their family would visit Florida from their native Indiana. The McLochlin brothers loved visiting our area, with its much warmer climate and beautiful beaches a short drive away.Ā
The fresh certified Angus boneless (l.-r.) NY strip, filet mignon & ribeye steaks at Macās.
When Dax tore his arm up during his sophomore year at Huntington University in Indiana, he transferred to the University of South Florida hoping to walk on the baseball team.
When that didnāt work out for him, Dax worked a number of sales jobs, while Drew got a job working for the Tampa Bay Bucs.Ā
The brothers had no idea at that time they would partner up with their entire family to open Macās Custom Meats + Deli in the Grand Oaks Plaza on Wesley Chapel Blvd. in Lutz.Ā
āWe loved this place called Rickās Custom Meats + Deli in Plant City,ā Dax says, āso we modeled pretty much everything about our store after theirs, when we saw that the Wesley Chapel area didnāt really have a great meat market. Without Rickās, none of this would even be possible.āĀ
Try Macās self-labeled sauces.Ā
Boneless certified Angus ribeye, NY strip and filet mignon steaks are the main stars in the Macās meat case and I can vouch for how delicious and tender all of those steaks are when you grill them. The meat case also features huge chicken breasts and wings, a variety of pork products (including beautiful chops and fresh bacon), as well as ground beef, Nathanās Kosher-style hot dogs, beef jerky and more.Ā
Dax says that on the first Saturday of pretty much every month since the store opened, Macās has hosted a āGrill & Chillā event where Dax and Drewās dad Mike grills one or more of those delicious meats and the store sells plates of them with a side of chips and a drink, āto introduce our customers to some of the different meat options we carry,ā Dax says.
To date, Jannah and I have enjoyed the hamburger, chicken and steak fajita and hot dog Grill & Chills, which also always feature one of Macās delicious self-branded sauces. Dax and I agree that the āChickān Dippinā Sauceā is our favorite.Ā
But, What About The Deli?Ā
Everyone loves Macās fresh-pressed Cubans.
Iām so glad you asked. Macās, which opened with a different brand of sliced deli meats and cheeses for its sandwiches, switched over to Boarās HeadĀ® brand a few months ago, ābecause it seemed like pretty much everyone requested it,ā Dax says. āWe definitely sell a lot more sandwiches than meat. And, all of our customers really seem to love our pressed Cubans.ā
And, those Cubans come in a nice variety of options,Ā including not only a traditional, with ham, pork, salami and Swiss cheese, but also turkey, ham & cheese and my favorite roast beef Cuban with Swiss (or provolone), all on fresh pressed Cuban bread. There also are āMac Daddyā (with double the ham) and āBig Macā (with double roast beef, turkey, ham and cheese) Cuban options.Ā
How about a freshly grilled steak sandwich?
You can even get grilled cheeseburgers, hot dogs, grilled chicken, pork and steak sandwiches at Macās. The grilled Boarās Head pastrami and cheese pressed on Cuban bread also is a must-try, and all of the Boarās Head meats and cheeses are available by the pound. Thereās also tuna and egg salad, cole slaw, potato and macaroni salad available. And, all frozen meats are 30% off regular prices, with deeper discounts available on certain Wednesdays.
āDrew and I also want to give a shout-out to our entire family ā our dad Mike, mom Jessi, my wife Macaley and my young son Chanceā for being so supportive of us during this journey,ā Dax says.
In other words, if you havenāt yet checked out Macās Custom Meats & Deli, please visit the clean, attractive shop soon ā and please tell Dax and Drew we sent you!
Macās Custom Meats + Deli (26316 Wesley Chapel Blvd.) is open Tues.-Fri., 11 a.m.-6 p.m., and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Sat. It is closed Sun. & Mon. For more info, call (813) 428-6573, search āMacās Custom Meats + Deliā on Facebook.Ā
