SR-93A NB 270MM (4)Were you stuck in the major backup on I-75 near the Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. interchange on Saturday? Here’s what happened.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), an accident on I-75 closed the northbound lanes of the interstate for several hours. FHP reports that at 11:50 a.m., Dennis W. Barefoot, 67, of Naples, was driving north in his 2005 Chevrolet pickup truck in the outside lane. At the same time, Sarah B. Suh, 19, of Winter Park, was driving north in the inside lane in her 2012 Hyundai sedan.

FHP reports that both vehicles attempted to merge into the center lane at the same time. To avoid a crash, Suh swerved back into the inside lane, but lost control of her car and collided with Barefoot’s truck, which had switched to the center lane.

Both vehicles came to rest in the roadway, closing northbound lanes. Barefoot and his passenger sustained minor injuries and were treated at Tampa General Hospital.

Both drivers and their passengers were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash and alcohol was determined to not be a factor in the collision. Both drivers were ticketed for an improper lane change.
