As Wesley Chapel Blvd. (S.R. 54) traffic passes by underneath, the traffic light above only flashes yellow, holding no authority to force drivers to hit the brakes and stop.
This has been the life of the stoplight at the intersection of Wesley Chapel Blvd. (S.R. /C.R. 54) and Pointe Pleasant Blvd./Wiregrass Ranch Blvd. since last December.
The traffic signal was installed in preparation for the opening of Wesley Chapel’s newest Walmart, the third in Pasco County, and will feature only blinking light until construction of the new commercial development at the northern end of the Wiregrass Ranch development is nearly completed.
“The light is fully operational and ready for a full cycle of red, yellow and green,” says Pasco County’s chief project manager Robert Shepherd.
Even though most new traffic signals flash for only 2-4 weeks to alert drivers that the light will soon be fully operational, Shepherd says that the light, which is in front of Wesley Chapel Nissan and Precision Kia, will continue to flash until there is enough traffic to justify the light being put on a full cycle.
The signal was installed during the week of December 15th and will serve patrons of the Walmart and an adjacent strip center, as well as the future residents of Wiregrass Ranch, the massive Development of Regional Impact (DRI) located between S.R.s 54 and 56, east of Bruce B. Downs Blvd.
A traffic signal at Cypress Ridge Blvd. and S.R. 56, that also had been previously flashing, was put on its normal cycle on February 7.
