For two decades now, Teena Hughes, M.D., has treated children at her private practice in the University Medical Park at E. Fletcher Ave. and N. 46th St., about five minutes south of Tampa Palms.

As her practice celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2021, Dr. Hughes is excited to welcome her son, Roger Hughes, III, D.O., to Teena Hughes, M.D., P.A., Pediatrics.

For now, the name remains unchanged, but both doctors agree the partnership reflects exciting growth.

Caregivers bring their children for routine care and well checks, including free prenatal consultations for moms-to-be. School and sports physicals are offered, as are vaccines. The providers also treat illnesses and injuries in children, and the doctors also are on staff at AdventHealth Tampa.

Dr. Teena Hughes is a Board-certified pediatrician who earned her M.D. (Doctor of Medicine) degree from the University of South Florida (now known as the Morsani) College of Medicine, followed by a three-year residency at All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg. She then spent seven years practicing in a health care group before launching her own private practice.

Dr. Roger Hughes, III, joined the practice last July after completing a three-year pediatric residency through the University of Florida at Sacred Heart hospital in Pensacola, FL. Prior to that, he earned a Bachelor of Science in microbiology from the University of Florida in Gainesville in 2013. He then earned a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Bradenton, FL, in 2017.

ā€œInitially I went to medical school thinking I would see adults, but in the third year you do rotations and I did pediatrics here in Tampa,ā€ he says. ā€œI loved it, so from there, it just kind of worked out.ā€

While Dr. Teena doesn’t expect it to happen anytime soon, the long-term plan is for Dr. Roger to eventually run the practice when the time comes for her to retire.

ā€œThe patients are excited and thrilled to meet him,ā€ she says. ā€œThey’ve all heard about him over the years, and it’s nice to have someone to learn the ropes and get to know all the patients.ā€

In addition to helping with hospital rounds at AdventHealth Tampa and sharing the after-hours phone calls, Dr. Roger brings an influx of fresh ideas to the practice.

ā€œIt’s nice to have someone to bounce ideas off of and ask questions to,ā€ says Dr. Teena.

She also says that some patients prefer to see a man, so she’s glad that he is now available to those patients.

Because she’s been in practice for more than two decades, Dr. Teena now sees the children of people who were her patients when they were kids.

ā€œYou have to be flattered,ā€ she says, ā€œIt’s nice to see everybody grow up.ā€

In addition to the two doctors, patients also may see the practice’s two advanced nurse practitioners — Kelsy Overton, APRN, and Ashleigh Mader, APRN.

As a private practice, Dr. Teena says she and the other practitioners in her office offer more individualized service and have a better rapport with their patients than what you might find at some of the big pediatric groups.

For example, when her patients call after hours, she knows exactly who she’s talking to. That’s different than the big groups, where doctors have to see patients from several different offices.

Dr. Teena Hughes Pediatrics offers benefits typically associated with a larger practice, such as extended hours. In fact, the office open Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-6 p.m., and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays, but the plan is to expand those weekday hours to 8 p.m.

ā€œWe want to be more available for working parents,ā€ she says, ā€œand prevent emergency room visits.ā€

Jennifer Statz is a mom of three kids who moved to Westchase, but wouldn’t even consider finding a new pediatrician.

ā€œI love them so much that I happily drive 30 minutes,ā€ she says. ā€œThey’ve seen my kids grow up, and they’re almost like friends to me.ā€

While her kids have been cared for by Dr. Teena since her oldest child was born, they have seen Dr. Roger, too.

ā€œI feel equally comfortable with them both,ā€ she says. ā€œI love seeing Dr. [Teena] Hughes, but it’s great to have both of them there. She’s got the experience and he’s full of all this new knowledge.ā€

Jennifer says that all of the practitioners at the office — and the staff members, too — are warm and genuine, and make her feel at ease, especially when her kids are anxious about vaccines or seeing the doctor in general.

ā€œI always feel like they listen to my concerns, address them appropriately, and do whatever it takes to help me understand why they’re recommending a particular medicine or whatever it might be,ā€ she explains. ā€œI always leave there with everything I need.ā€

Covid Testing & Vaccines

While the office never closed during the Covid-19 pandemic, Dr. Hughes says there were many fewer patients over the past year, who would usually be seen for school physicals, sports physicals, and to be treated for illnesses they may have picked up at school.

ā€œIt’s now ramping back up,ā€ she says, while the office continues to follow all protocols and guidelines recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) & Prevention.

The office also offers Covid-19 testing, which does take a couple of days to get results from the lab. And, thanks to the new CDC guidelines, the Pfizer Covid vaccine is now available at the office for anyone ages 5 and older and the Moderna vaccine is available to anyone ages 18 and older.

ā€œYou do not have to be a patient to come in for the vaccine,ā€ Dr. Teena says.

The practice also has ramped up its partnerships with manufacturers and companies looking to improve their products, offering research trials to patients, if they want to participate.

For example, a current study gives new parents six months of free infant formula plus incentives to participate.

ā€œFormula companies are always doing research to improve,ā€ Dr. Teena says. ā€œIt’s great for a new mom who needs formula. These are tried-and-true companies, so it’s not experimental.ā€

She says the current projects have created an entire research department at her practice, which now includes five people. Active projects include vaccine trials for meningitis and pneumococcal pneumonia. Dr. Teena says rapid Covid testing should begin soon, and she’s also hoping to start Covid vaccine trials for children.

ā€œIt’s completely voluntary and if people don’t feel comfortable, they don’t have to participate,ā€ she says. ā€œWe participate because it helps medicine to be new and innovative and helps patients.ā€

Dr. Teena Hughes Has Been Treating New Tampa’s Kids For 20+ Years!

Dr. Teena Hughes (second from left, seated) and her happy, professional staff can help keep your kids healthy at Dr. Teena Hughes, M.D., P.A. Pediatrics off E. Fletcher Ave.

While growing up in Orlando, pediatrician Teena Hughes, M.D., decided early in life that she wanted to be a physician and heal young people.

ā€œI always wanted to be a pediatrician,ā€ she says. ā€œThat was my ultimate goal since the ninth grade.ā€

She achieved that goal, becoming a Board-certified pediatrician after earning her M.D. (Doctor of Medicine) degree from the University of South Florida College of Medicine, followed by a three-year residency at All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg.

Since then, Hughes has been helping New Tampa families raise healthy children for more than 20 years.

Her experience includes practicing as part of a healthcare group for seven years and now, from her own solo practice in the University Medical Park at E. Fletcher Ave. and N. 46th St., about five minutes south of Tampa Palms Blvd.

Families visiting Dr. Teena Hughes, M.D., P.A., Pediatrics will find plenty of space. The lobby and well-child areas were enlarged, while new bathrooms and exam rooms were added in a recent expansion.

ā€œIn pediatrics you don’t get just one person coming to see the doctor,ā€ Dr. Hughes says. ā€œIt’s usually (two or more) people in a group, with strollers.ā€

Services provided to patients start even before a child is born, with free prenatal get-acquainted visits and consultations available for moms-to-be.

Routine exams for school and sports are conducted and Dr. Hughes carries a complete line of vaccines as she recommends that parents follow immunization schedules set by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control or as required by their school district.

When it comes to treating childhood afflictions, Dr. Hughes and her team are prepared to treat everything from allergies to whooping cough.

She also is on the staff of the pediatrics department at the nearby Florida Hospital Tampa off Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd.

The staff also is ready to take care of patients quickly, so the journey back to good health can begin.

ā€œWe always offer same-day appointments and try to get everybody in that needs to get in,ā€ Dr. Hughes says. ā€œOtherwise, they’ll just go to a walk-in clinic, but it’s much better to see your regular doctor.ā€

Receptionist and medical assistant Katie Klovski concurs. ā€œWe’re not going to turn them away,ā€ says Klovski. ā€œI want to make sure they’re taken care of and their medical needs are addressed.ā€

Klovski adds that one thing families can do to ensure things go smoothly during a medical appointment is to bring in your updated insurance cards whenever there are coverage changes.

Treating patients well is just as important a part of the care provided by Hughes Pediatrics as treating them quickly, according to nurse practitioner Brandy Higson, DNP (Doctor of Nursing Practice). ā€œIt’s important to build a rapport so they feel like they’re getting the proper attention and you can have a trusting relationship.ā€

Trust is indeed an important part of any healing relationship, says Michelle Blackmon, LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse). ā€œWhen they trust me, they’re comfortable asking for what they need.ā€

Blackmon has been with the practice for 14 years and speaks with confidence regarding the staff’s ability to take care of these young patients.

ā€œWe can handle anything that comes up,ā€ she says.

Whatever maladies patients bring in the door, receptionist Jessica Archiquette says a caring attitude can help the office’s patients feel better.

ā€œIt’s important to show respect and empathy while taking care of their needs,ā€ Archiquette says.

The commitment made by Dr. Hughes and her staff is such that many of their patients continue with the practice through their college years.

ā€œA lot of them still need vaccines for college, so we’ll still see them if they want to come in,ā€ she says.

Having treated an entire generation of children, Dr. Hughes is learning how much some of those patients appreciate her work.

ā€œSome of my original (patients) are now bringing in their own kids,ā€ she says. ā€œIt makes you feel like maybe you did a good job.ā€

Kendra Green is one of those former patients with children who are now patients of Dr. Hughes. She gives the practice five stars in her online Google review.

ā€œIt was only right that I trust her with the care of my children as well,ā€ Green wrote. ā€œAny time that I have contacted the after-hours service, I am responded to within the hour. Anyone I know with children, I always recommend this office.ā€

Also giving Hughes high approval in a Google review is Carly Reed, who writes, ā€œBest caring and friendliest doctor. Teena is the best and she loves the kids and always makes sure to find out what’s ailing them.ā€

Two of the trends that Dr. Hughes says she finds noteworthy among her patients are growing problems with childhood obesity and diabetes. She says it’s not only important to eat the right foods, but to eat them the right way…as a family.

ā€œIt’s important to eat together,ā€ says the longtime New Tampa resident. ā€œYou learn more about your children if you eat dinner together.ā€

Hughes also recommends limiting video games and electronic device usage and increasing exercise with things like walking, bike riding and sports to promote good childhood health.

Having previously worked in a group practice, Dr. Hughes says she finds that she actually likes the business side of what she does. Staying on top of things makes all of the difference as far as having the resources to attract good staff members and treat all of her patients’ needs appropriately.

ā€œI think a lot of doctors just want to be doctors, but you can’t do that when you have your own practice,ā€ Dr. Hughes says. ā€œYou have to make sure everything is completed and properly billed. It’s a lot easier to do that now with everything online.ā€

Most insurance plans are accepted at Dr. Hughes Pediatrics, which also participates in the Florida Healthy Kids program and in Medicaid.
