Marc & Kelly Rockquemore are proud to have opened their third Tampa Bay-area New Identities Hair Studio, in the New Tampa Center plaza on Bruce B. Downs Blvd.

Not unlike the local restaurant business, the hair salon scene in New Tampa has been pretty volatile the last two decades. Itā€™s therefore pretty impressive that Marc and Kelly Rockquemore, who are now the proud owners of three New Identities Hair Studios in the Tampa Bay area ā€” including two right here in New Tampa ā€” have not only survived, but thrived during that span.

The Rockquemores opened their first New Identities Hair Studio in what was then called the Palm Lake at Tampa Palms (now the Shoppes at Amberly) shopping center 17 years ago, which means Iā€™ve known them for 18 years, because they came into my office in that same plaza looking for advertising for the salon several months before it opened.

Since then, the Rockquemores have opened a second successful New Identities salon in the Riverview/Apollo Beach area that they refer to as their ā€œSouth Shoreā€ location, and have now opened their third studio ā€” and hostedĀ  a Feb. 7 North Tampa Bay Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting ā€” in the space in the Publix-anchored New Tampa Center plaza on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. that most recently was occupied by Bella Mia hair salon.

The 1,400-sq.-ft. space also previously was home to the second Bostonian Hair Salon. Marc admits that Bostonian owner Joseph Caetano was something of a role model for them, as Caetanoā€™s salons were well-known throughout the area for high-quality, affordable hair services provided by professionally-trained stylists and hair color specialists.

ā€œEven though Joseph (now 84 years old) no longer owns a salon in this market,ā€ Marc say, ā€œhis success paved the way for salons like ours. The key for us is being able to sustain that success long-term.ā€

Maintaining success hasnā€™t really been an issue for the Rockquemores, who opened the new salon on BBD with some of the popular stylists from the Tampa Palms location.

ā€œI just think that Kelly and I have both have been relentless in our pursuit of success, by our own definition,ā€ Marc says. ā€œWeā€™re always working to make this thing better all the time and weā€™ve been fortunate to have great people who have stayed with us long-term.ā€

Kelly adds, ā€œWe had to open another salon up here. We were having two stylists working at each station in Tampa Palms.ā€

The Rockquemores say they started looking for a new salon sometime last summer and quickly found the New Tampa Center location. They were open by November.

ā€œWe did a lot of the work ourselves, whatever we could do,ā€ Kelly says. ā€œIt all came together pretty quickly.ā€

The new New Identities, which has a total of ten stations available, already has eight stylists, four of whom came from the ā€œovercrowdedā€ Tampa Palms studio, but Marc says, ā€œWe still have room for more here, and weā€™ve been getting some outstanding applicants.ā€ At New Identities, stylists have to be properly trained, and clients pay different rates for the same services, based on the level of a stylistā€™s training.

They both credit advertising in not only the New Tampa but also the Wesley Chapel edition of the Neighborhood News with helping them get the new salon started off right.

ā€œIt hasnā€™t been easy getting this place open and running properly,ā€ Marc admits, ā€œbut itā€™s truly been a blessing to us so far.ā€

New Identities specializes in ā€œanything to do with hair, including hair styling for men and women, coloring, perms, relaxers and even extensions. ā€œWe definitely are known for our color specialists,ā€ Kelly says.

The salon also specializes in playing a vital role in the biggest day of a womanā€™s life. ā€œOur Bridal Services primarily consist of hair design up-dos, shampoo & blow dries), as well as makeup application,ā€ Kelly says. ā€œLet us take care of your entire wedding party!ā€

Your Stylists, Your Salon

The Rockquemores are somewhat skeptical about the rise of ā€œSalon Suites,ā€ where stylists (or other beauty industry professionals) can rent a space, set their own hours and ā€œbe their own boss.ā€

ā€œBut, some states, like New Jersey, are banning the salon suites because itā€™s easier to avoid paying taxes on what you make,ā€ Marc says. ā€œThose booth rental people are independent contractors, whereas we work on commission and offer employee benefits and continuing education training.ā€

Kelly adds, ā€œA lot of those people get stuck at a certain level because they donā€™t want to have to pay out of their own pocket for education. Here, everytime you receive more training, you have an opportunity to earn more money.ā€

Marc adds that he has very strong opinions about booth rentals because, ā€œall youā€™re doing is renting a 10-foot-by-10-foot space in a store. Youā€™re not incorporated, you donā€™t have employees or have to pay business taxes, youā€™re not inspected and on and on and on. Youā€™re not a business owner, but thatā€™s what the stylists are being sold.ā€

Marc says that he and Kelly were particularly proud to have been named the ā€œBest Hair Salon in New Tampa & Wesley Chapelā€ in the recent Neighborhood News Reader Survey & Contest. In addition to those accolades, New IdentitiesĀ  has been the official salon of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Tampa Bay Storm cheerleaders, and most recently, the Tampa Bay Lightning girls. The Tampa Palms location was featured on the HBO series ā€œHard Knocksā€ last summer, when Bucs linebacker Kwon Alexander (photo, above left) took the advice ofĀ  teammate (and New Identities client) Gerald McCoy, and came to New Identities for a new color job.

ā€œWe do a lot to make sure people know who we are (including possibly being a sponsor of the upcoming Taste of New Tampa, see pg. 3),ā€ Marc says, ā€œbut Kwon being filmed here for ā€˜Hard Knocksā€™ was a great bonus.ā€

New Identities Hair Studio Featured On HBOā€™s ā€˜Hard Knocksā€™ With The Bucs!

It wasnā€™t just another hair coloring appointment for Katie Ellwood.

After all, Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Kwon Alexander was sitting in her chair at the New Identities Hair Studio of Tampa in Tampa Palms and a handful of television cameras were pointed right at her.

Everything she said, every move she made, every hair she dyed red was going to be shown to the entire country on HBOā€™s popular ā€œHard Knocksā€ reality show. ā€œWas I nervous?,ā€™ā€™ Katie said. ā€œYeah, a little.ā€

Thanks to a recommendation from one of her customers, Bucs defensive tackle and Tampa Palms resident Gerald McCoy, Ellwood was working her magic on Alexander, who was looking to sharpen the red in his current ā€˜do. Katie had done a similar job on McCoy two years ago, and the All-Pro lineman noticed that Alexanderā€™s color was fading and told his teammate he needed to go see his stylist.

ā€œHard Knocks,ā€ which airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. on HBO and offers a behind-the-scenes look at one NFL team each preseason ā€“ this year itā€™s the Bucs ā€“Ā  followed along.

ā€œThat was my first experience with a camera crew focused on what I was doing,ā€™ā€™ said Katie, although she has been involved in other photo shoots over the years. ā€œThe production crew was very nice and very informative.ā€

Marc Rockquemore, who owns New Identities Hair Studios of Tampa with his wife Kelly, said they had less than 24 hours to get ready for Alexander and the HBO crew.

Being on reality television shows, however, is old hat for Rockquemore and the crew at New Identities, which has been featured on shows like FOX-TVā€™s ā€œAmbush Makeover,ā€ The Learning Channelā€™s ā€œA Wedding Storyā€ and MTVā€™s ā€œTrue Life.ā€

New Identities also has had a long relationship with the Bucs. From 2003 until last year, Rockquemore sent a crew of stylists to every Bucs game to do the cheerleadersā€™ hair. Currently, New Identities is working with the Tampa Bay Lightning cheerleaders.

ā€œWeā€™ve had a lot of blessings come into our lives,ā€™ā€™ says Rockquemore, whose studio has more than 10,000 followers on Instagram.

Katieā€™s experience in front of the cameras took more than an hour, but once edited by HBO producers, was distilled into her 30 seconds of fame in the showā€™s third episode (check it out on the HBO GO app).

Instead of any viewing parties, Katie said she just went over to her girlfriendā€™s house to watch it when it aired.

ā€œIt was a little strange to see,ā€™ā€™ said Katie, a big Bucs fan and ā€œHard Knocksā€ viewer even before her appearance. ā€œI just wanted to make sure I didnā€™t sound like a goober or anything. Once my 30 seconds were over, I was able to relax and just watch the rest of the show.ā€

She did receive a slew of text messages that night. Patrons at the new Fat Rabbit Pub in Tampa Palms, which Katie owns with her husband John, congratulated her the next day. Two days later, an old friend and former Bucs cheerleader texted her from New York to tell her she had seen her on the show.

ā€œOverall, it was a really cool experience,ā€™ā€™ Katie said.
