GreatFlorida Insurance Agents Help You Protect Your Home, Car & Business

(L.-r.) Julie and Bill Sullivan, Julie Morgan and Nicole Weaver of GreatFlorida Insurance on Cross Creek Blvd. provide outstanding insurance service for your home, auto, business & more.

Bill Sullivan, the owner of GreatFlorida insurance in the Cory Lake Professional Center on Cross Creek Blvd. in New Tampa, says the local area โ€“ especially nearby Wesley Chapel โ€“ is experiencing growth, with lots of new businesses and new families moving into the area.

He wants to help these people be sure that theyโ€™re properly covered and paying the best rates possible when it comes to their insurance needs.

So, on May 25, GreatFlorida Insurance hosted a Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce (WCCC) ribbon-cutting event, โ€œto let people know weโ€™re here,โ€ explains Bill.

โ€œWe offer traditional home, auto, boat and motorcycle policies, along with renterโ€™s policies, general liability and umbrella coverage,โ€ Bill says. โ€œWe also offer a wide variety of insurance products for business owners, such as commercial property insurance.โ€

GreatFlorida Insurance is a network of independent, franchised insurance agents that has been in business since 1991, with more than 100 offices located throughout Florida. Bill owns the New Tampa location, which originally opened in 2005 with a previous owner. That owner sold the business to Bill in 2013. Bill says he made the purchase because the previous owner โ€” who was retiringโ€” had a very well-run, diligent and ethical business, a business that he has been able to build on and grow over the last three years.

Bill earned a B.S. degree in Business Administration from George Washington University in Washington, DC, and then worked in investment banking for 25 years in New England. Looking to make a change, he and his wife Julie moved down to Florida in August of 2012. Bill got his โ€œ2-20โ€ insurance license so he could sell all lines of Property & Casualty Insurance. Julie also works in the office as the office manager and customer service agent. She is a Licensed โ€œ4-40โ€ Sales and Service Representative. The Sullivans also work with two agents โ€“ who also hold โ€œ2-20โ€ licenses โ€“ Nicole Weaver and Julie Morgan.

GreatFlorida sells policies from many different auto insurance companies, including Travelers, Safeco, Mercury, Progressive, and Hartford, and homeowners insurance companies that include Prepared, Heritage, Safe Harbor, and Peninsula.

Looking Out For You

Bill says statistics show that 85 percent of people are inadequately insured โ€“ either they have too much or too little.

For example, Bill says he often sees empty-nesters who had high limits when their teenage children were driving and two parents were commuting to work, but now that itโ€™s just the two of them โ€“ and maybe theyโ€™ve even retired and arenโ€™t commuting anymore themselves โ€“ so, do they really need all that coverage? The agents at GreatFlorida Insurance want to help clients be sure theyโ€™re neither over-insured nor under-insured.

GreatFla2Not only do peopleโ€™s life circumstances change, but the way insurance carriers price policies change, too.

Bill says insurance carriers are โ€œfickleโ€ and the things that change in a year can have a big impact on the price of an insurance policy. โ€œOne year, insurance carriers like a certain area, and the next they donโ€™t. Rates change and go up, so we think we should review your policies at least every 12-18 months.โ€

Thatโ€™s why the agents at GreatFlorida Insurance automatically and proactively watch to see if rates increase whenever your policies come up for renewal.

โ€œMost people buy a policy and then donโ€™t look at it again for four or five years,โ€ he explains. โ€œPeople view it as time consuming. So, we do that โ€˜dirty workโ€™ for you to take that away.โ€

Thatโ€™s exactly why Wesley Chapel resident Kathleen Zagaros says she switched her home and auto insurance policies to GreatFlorida. She was frustrated that her former agency didnโ€™t seem concerned that her policy renewal prices were going up and didnโ€™t offer her any alternatives, prompting her to wonder, โ€œIf you have to start doing your own research to find a better policy, why have an insurance agent?โ€

When Kathleen reached out to GreatFlorida, however, she says she found something very different. โ€œBill and Julie provide excellent and personalized service,โ€ she says. โ€œThey want to find the best policies for their customers. Instead of you having to call them, they already know and have other options to present to you. I was able to change my homeowners insurance as well as our car insurance for less money and better coverages!โ€

Kathleen says she also likes that she can do business with the Sullivans over the phone and via email. โ€œItโ€™s so easy and not stressful at all!,โ€ she says, adding that she likes that she has an advocate if sheโ€™s in an accident.ย  โ€œIf you are involved in an accident, they are right there to help you through the claims process.โ€

Kathleen says Bill and Julie and their employees understand what good customer service is all about and go out of their way to provide it. She says they all have great senses of humor and that talking with them is like talking to a good friend or a close neighbor.

โ€œJulieโ€™s title is โ€˜Director of Customer Happiness & Office Operations,โ€™โ€ Kathleen says. โ€œI think that says it all!โ€ Because she is such a happy customer, Kathleen says she highly recommends GreatFlorida Insurance all the time. And, Bill says sheโ€™s not alone in her endorsement.

โ€œA good majority of our business comes through referrals,โ€ says Bill, โ€œI take that as a compliment.โ€

Flood Insurance

One tip Bill is always sharing with clients: Homeownerโ€™s insurance doesnโ€™t cover damage from a flood.

โ€œA lot of people are dismissive about flood insurance because theyโ€™ve never experienced a flood and think it wonโ€™t apply to them,โ€ says Bill. โ€œBut, for as little as $299 annually, you can have peace of mind should something happen.โ€

โ€œI personally went through it up north,โ€ Bill says. โ€œI never would have thought I needed flood insurance because I was far inland. But then, it rained for 14 days straight and we had water damage, and I paid for all the damages out of pocket. It was a costly lesson.โ€

He stresses that, especially in Florida, water damage leads to other issues, too. โ€œWith our heat and humidity, we need to be concerned about mold,โ€ says Bill. โ€œMold is toxic and airborne, and the cost of having a home repaired and remediated is expensive.โ€ He says this can be a huge problem for snowbirds who may leave their home for a few months at a time. โ€œIf thereโ€™s any water damage while theyโ€™re gone, it doesnโ€™t take long for mold to take hold and grow substantially. โ€œ

Bill says if a Realtor refers someone to GreatFlorida for a homeownerโ€™s insurance quote, he and his staff always provide a flood quote, too. โ€œThe lender doesnโ€™t require it, and the client doesnโ€™t have to take it, but we still highly recommend it.โ€

โ€œAll of Florida is a flood zone,โ€ says Bill, โ€œto what severity depends on where a home is located.โ€

Brass Tap Now More Than Just Beer

BrassTapIf you’re like me and not particularly into beer the may have been avoiding The Brass Tap in the Shops at Wiregrass mall, even though you like the location and the live music and other “stuff” going on there.

Well, avoid it no more. Owner Jeff Martin is proud to have added a full, premium liquor bat at the Wiregrass Brass Tap and will soon unveil a “new BBQ and more food concept in the vacant former location of 100 Montaditos, which is adjacent to The Brass Tap (which has seven locations throughout the Tampa Bay area) at the mall.

Cheddar’s To Open on Monday!

CheddarRibbonCheddar’s, the growing, Texas-based chain with 100 company-owned restaurants and 65 franchises (including Brandon and Pinellas Park), will open in front of the Tampa Premium Outlets (TPO) mall (at 2391 Sun Vista Dr., off S.R. 56) on Monday, June 6.

The Neighborhood News was on hand today for the Wesley Chapel location’s “family & friends” pre-opening event, which also included a Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce (WCCC) ribbon cutting just after 10:30 a.m.

Grilled 8-oz. top sirloin

The prediction here is that Cheddar’s, which has re-branded itself as a “Scratch Kitchen,” will be a monster hit in our area, which is hurting for reasonably-priced restaurants where you can get anything from steaks and ribs to grilled salmon and tilapia. It has similar (albeit mostly less expensive) price points as Applebee’s or Chili’s, but the food โ€” including the grilled 8-oz. top sirloin pictured here โ€” is definitely a step up from those microwave-dependent chains.

“Literally everything here is made from scratch,” said one of Cheddar’s regional managers. “We pride ourselves on stressing the details to make our customers happy.” We also were told that beginning next year, the company plans to open another 20 restaurants per year for at least the next five years.

With its prime location in front of TPO, reasonably-priced full liquor bar and truly fresh-tasting food at very fair prices, expect long lines for lunch and, especially, dinner tables from the moment the place opens.

Ford’s Garage On The Way

Ford’s Garage, which mixes the vibe of old school service stations with burgers and craft beers, is one step closer to becoming one of Wesley Chapel’s new neighborhood hot spots.

Eric J. Hendra of Hendra and Associates, a consulting engineering and surveying firm in Tampa, officially submitted a preliminary site plan application for Ford’s Garage of Wesley Chapel in March to Donna Huber, Pasco County’s Senior Development Review Technician.

The restaurant will be located adjacent to the Pollo Tropical on the Northeast corner of S.R. 56 and Grand Cypress Drive (east of Wesley Chapel Blvd.) directly across from the Tampa Premium Outlets.

It will be owner Marc Brown’s fifth Ford’s Garage location. Brown, of South Tampa, started the chain in Fort Myers in 2012, later added locations in Estero and Cape Coral and recently opened a location in Brandon.

The project, wrote Hendra in the preliminary site plan application, will be a “local restaurant with nostalgic vehicles highlighting the Fordโ€™s Car manufacturer products.” Brown and his ownership group has a licensing deal with Ford Motor Co., so car enthusiasts will enjoy the attention to detail if previous locations are any indication.

The Ford’s Garage menu generally focuses on a vast selection of burgers, chicken, steak and salads, and a variety of popular macaroni and cheese variations according to many reviews on Yelp!. It also boasts more than 150 different types of craft beers in bottle and on tap.

There will be 7,211-sq.ft. of indoor seating, and a 1,192-sq.ft. patio area, according to the proposed site plan. The restaurant will include “static mounted Ford Vehicles for icons located within terminal islands along with a antique non-working fuel dispenser.”

There will be 92 parking spots.

Attorney Kevin Astl Leads Brandon Legal Groupโ€™s Local Office

BrandonLegal
Kevin Astl, the managing attorney at the Brandon Legal Groupโ€™s New Tampa/Wesley Chapel office in the Central Bank building on BBD Blvd., is a man who wears many hats.

His shingle outside his office may state that his area of expertise is family law, but Kevin D. Astl is a man who wears many hats.

Heโ€™s the compassionate listener who hears it all and gently nudges a box of tissues across the table; heโ€™s the gimlet-eyed analyst who parses statutes to find the perfect legal weapons to argue your case; heโ€™s the family man whose 9-year-oldโ€™s artwork adorns his office walls; and heโ€™s the rock-and-roller who goes home and takes the stress of his day out on a drum set. Most important is that Astl is an attorney you can trust to fight for your child, your family and your livelihood.

Astl is the managing attorney at the Brandon Legal Groupโ€™s New Tampa/Wesley Chapel office, located in the Central Bank building on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. (just east of the corner of BBD and County Line Rd.). He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Political Science in 1996 from the University of South Florida, and in 1999, received his Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree from the Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University in Macon, GA.

At the local office of his firm (one of the three Brandon Legal Group offices in the Tampa Bay area), Astl handles all aspects of family law cases, but also has extensive experience in more than 35 aspects of law, including criminal, business and corporate law, music and entertainment law, as well as personal injury and medical malpractice cases.

Astl says that Brandon Legal Group is a, โ€œfull-service law firm. We have 7 on-staff attorneys, each very experienced in their own right.โ€

He adds that, in other words, โ€œIf I canโ€™t help you with your legal needs (myself), there almost always is another lawyer in the firm who is able to help.โ€

Not Your Typical Lawyer

Astl says he was a musician before he was a lawyer and he still enjoys creative writing, songwriting and playing. โ€œPlaying drums keeps me sane,โ€ he says.

In addition to belonging to legal organizations like the Florida Bar Association (since 1999), Florida Bar Family Law Section, Florida Bar Criminal Law Section, Florida Bar Association Entertainment and Sports Law Section and American Inns of Court Tampa Family Law Inn, Astlโ€™s affiliations also include the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, Florida Motion Picture and Television Association, and the Florida Association of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

โ€œPeople can represent themselves, but the law is an extremely technical and complex endeavor,โ€ Astl says.

What Astl offers clients that they cannot get on their own is not just nearly two decades of experience, but also a familiarity with case histories and with the vagaries of the various local court systems, courthouses, clerks and judges in the many surrounding counties.

Astlโ€™s disarming friendliness and wry sense of humor help him connect with clients, and they also help him preserve his peace of mind in a field that can often be fraught with tension. He has to regularly fight client stereotypes about the billing habits of lawyers; and not a week goes by that a client doesnโ€™t want to check Astlโ€™s advice against something out of TVโ€™s โ€œLaw & Orderโ€ or Google. โ€œThereโ€™s more disinformation out there about what we do than information,โ€ he sighs.

As someone who considered studying sociology or psychology before deciding on political science and, ultimately, the law, Astl enjoys not just the hustle and bustle of the courthouse, but also the more subtle sizing up of witnesses and personality assessments he has to conduct, often within moments.

Amy Mackler says she hired Astl to represent her during her divorce five years ago, and itโ€™s a decision she says sheโ€™s thankful she made.

โ€œHe doesnโ€™t come across as your typical attorney,โ€ says Mackler, who now lives in St. Petersburg but was a New Tampa resident for 22 years. โ€œRegardless of if your case is finished, he continues to maintain a relationship. Heโ€™d call and check up, follow up and make sure everything was good in my life.โ€

Mackler appreciates that Astl is efficient at what he does, but also that heโ€™s open and honest.

โ€œIf he doesnโ€™t feel like he should take your case, heโ€™s not going to take your case just to make money,โ€ she says. Not only did she hire him again a couple of years later for another matter, sheโ€™s referred him to many friends.

Astl is heading the firmโ€™s northward expansion. His goals are to maintain a presence at the current Central Bank location, but also to expand to include another attorney and a paralegal by the end of the year. At the rate Astl is going โ€” heโ€™s signed up eight clients in just the past two weeks โ€” that looks like an attainable goal. Although heโ€™ll continue to do family law, heโ€™s also interested in growing his representation of small businesses. As a 17-year New Tampa and Wesley Chapel resident, not only does he frequent local small businesses, heโ€™s also watched numerous companies rise and fall, and would like to be able to help them succeed.

Having practiced on his own and in a large corporate environment for years, Astl loves his present setup.

โ€œI like being part of a boutique firm,โ€ says Astl. โ€œItโ€™s like I work with my friends. The way Brandon Legal Group is set up with the satellite offices, you just have to practice law,โ€ explaining that the head office manages paperwork and finances so that he can do his job. โ€œI can represent my clients…focus on them.โ€

Astl also says he appreciates the fact that the attorneys at Brandon Legal Group are encouraged to maintain a manageable workload โ€” he has about 50 cases on hand at any given time โ€” rather than take on every potential client. A manageable caseload means a reasonable separation between home and work, says Astl, which helps create the objectivity that he needs to be able to approach the case with clarity.

โ€œA work-life balance is very important,โ€ he says, especially when dealing with family law cases that can sometimes be brutal (except for adoptions; he says adopting parents are his favorite type of family law clients to represent).

Astl works toward that balance through family and creative endeavors. He tries to spend as much time as he can with his two sons: the 22-year-old veteran who served in Iraq and now attends the University of South Florida, and the 9-year-old who often spends afternoons in dadโ€™s office.

The office of attorney Kevin D. Astl of Brandon Legal Group is located at 20701 BBD Suite 202, Tampa.ย For more information or to make an appointment for a consultation, call 933-7200, or email kevin.astl@brandonlegalgroup.com or visit BrandonLegalGroup.com.
