Minivan Full Of Local Children Hit By Semi
A 16-year-old Wesley Chapel girl and five of her passengers are alive after the new driver drove her Dodge minivan in front of the path of a semi truck on S.R. 54 and Curley Rd., a Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) report states.
Jasmine Dixon was driving the 2005 van with four children, ages 5-12, who are all Tampa and Wesley Chapel residents. Jamira Dixon, 31, sat in the front passenger seat as Jasmine tried to make a left turn onto Curley Rd. from S.R. 54 on July 26, and was struck by a semi truck traveling westbound. According to the FHP report, the truck did not have enough time to stop before colliding with the minivan.
All of the passengers in the van were treated at St. Josephâs Hospital with injuries ranging from minor to serious. The children ages 5 andâ12 sustained the most serious injuries and were airlifted to the hospital. All of the passengers were wearing their seatbelts.
Five Key Points About The New Ramps
⢠The exit points for the new ramps are 2 miles further south than you are used to exiting onto S.R. 56.
⢠The posted road signs give plenty of advance warning and lighted message boards are being used for now to make drivers aware of the new exits.
⢠Should you miss the exit, donât panic! Just continue on I-75 about 4 miles north to the next exit (S.R. 54, Exit 279) and either use local roads (S.R. 54, BBD, etc.) or get back onto southbound I-75.
⢠Workers will still be in the area until the project is completed â please watch out for them!
⢠Night lane closures will be used as needed until the project has been completed.
Notices of upcoming I-75 lane closures are listed on FDOTâs project website, MyTBI.com, where you also can see photos and get other updates about ongoing and future projects, such as the reconstruction of the I-75 rest areas in Wesley Chapel located between S.R. 56 and C.R. 54, and the widening of I-75 between S.R. 56 and C.R. 54.
