SPOTLIGHT ON…Heartwood Preserve Cemetery

In the old Florida woods where she grew up, in what is now the Trinity area of New Port Richey (just a short drive west of Wesley Chapel), Laura Starkey has set 41 acres of land aside as the Heartwood Preserve Conservation Cemetery, adjacent to the 18,000-acre Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Preserve.

On Nov. 4, Heartwood Preserve celebrated its one-year anniversary in business with refreshments and cake, an artist providing temporary henna tattoos and activities for the family.

In the year since it opened โ€” as the first conservation cemetery in the Tampa Bay region, and one of just a handful in the state โ€” Heartwood Preserve has offered environmentally-friendly options for people looking for a more natural burial.

โ€œThe word โ€˜Conservationโ€™ in our name means that not only are we are providing a natural burial option for those who donโ€™t want all the fancy bells and whistles of a modern burial with an expensive casket and vault, but weโ€™re also really contributing to the permanent conservation of this ecosystem,โ€ explains Laura, who is the cemeteryโ€™s founder and executive director. โ€œWe are both literally and figuratively becoming part of this land.โ€

Laura and Heartwood Preserve manager Diana Sayegh explain that, first and foremost, the cemetery is about conserving the precious longleaf pine flatwoods and cypress dome wetlands ecosystems of the preserve.

โ€œWe invite people to come and take a walk, hike and get some fresh air,โ€ Diana says. โ€œYou can park for free, use our picnic benches, and experience nature. There are woodpeckers, owls and butterflies, and we have free events, such as silent meditation walks, yoga and even frog-listening events. This place is gorgeous, and we want the community to experience it.โ€

Diana says the fact that Heartwood Preserve allows pre-planning sets it apart from other conservation cemeteries.

โ€œLike making a will, pre-planning for your cremation or burial is a gift to your family,โ€ says Diana. โ€œYour family is not left with the burden of the cost or the decision making. They have peace of mind for when that time comes.โ€

She continues, โ€œIt is a cemetery, and itโ€™s sad, but itโ€™s not typical. Itโ€™s natural and beautiful and serene and peaceful.โ€

Heartwood Preserve Conservation Cemetery is located at 4100 Starkey Blvd. Visitors are always welcome when the gates are open โ€” Mon.-Sat., 9:30 a.m.โ€“4:30 p.m., and 11 a.m.โ€“4:30 p.m. on Sun. Events that are open to the public, including yoga, educational activities and more, are listed on the events page of Heartwood Preserveโ€™s website at HeartwoodPreserve.com. For more info, call (727) 376-5111.

SPOTLIGHT ON…Beach House Assisted Living!

When the Beach House Assisted Living & Memory Care (located on S.R. 56, a half-mile east of Mansfield Blvd.) opens in January, it will include 100 residences and will be Wesley Chapelโ€™s first full-service assisted living and memory care facility.

โ€œWeโ€™re bringing resort-style senior living to (Wesley Chapel),โ€ says executive director Linda Mena. โ€œItโ€™s a very comfortable environment.โ€

She says itโ€™s called Beach House because it is intended to remind people of fond memories of summers past.

โ€œWe are also building memories,โ€ she says, โ€œand want to help our residents make new memories.โ€

The residences vary from โ€œalcoveโ€ apartments to two-bedroom, two-bathroom units. Right now, Beach House is accepting deposits to hold a spot in the new facility, and Mena says it is already about 30-percent occupied.

Of the 100 residences, 33 are specifically designated for memory care.

โ€œWe have an amazing memory care program called Heartfelt Connections,โ€ she says, โ€œcelebrating whatโ€™s left and not focusing on whatโ€™s been lost.โ€

Amenities in the 93,000-sq.-ft. Beach House include restaurant-style fine dining, a movie theater, full-service beauty salon and barber shop, arts & crafts studio, shuffleboard, and a putting green.

โ€œWe have many beautiful outside courtyards, covered porches, and a lot of common area space for residents,โ€ Mena adds, saying that the activities at the Beach House are chosen by the residents, as well.

โ€œWe donโ€™t do cookie cutter activities,โ€ she says. โ€œWe donโ€™t just do BINGO. We have a preliminary schedule, but it changes along with the audience it serves. If no one wants to play BINGO, weโ€™ll do something else.โ€

Mena adds that every aspect of care is designed to meet the needs of each individual person who chooses to call Beach House his or her home.

โ€œWe offer resident-centered, focused care,โ€ Mena says. โ€œFrom our dining menu to meeting (our residentsโ€™) clinical needs to socialization, we personalize every aspect for each resident.โ€

Mena invites people looking for assisted living for themselves or a loved one to visit the Beach House offsite sales office at 2754 Windguard Circle, Suite 101ย  (located across Bruce B. Downs Blvd. from Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel) to see the current pre-construction promotions. For more information, call (813) 358-0554 or visit BeachHouseWiregrass.com.

SPOTLIGHT ON…Creative Permanent Makeup By Pam!

Pam Edmonson is passionate about eyebrows. Sheโ€™s been offering Creative Permanent Makeup By Pam since 2011, but moved last year into her new location at Serenity Salon & Spa Suites, located off S.R. 54 in Suite 101 of the Brookfield Professional Park, west of the Walmart at the corner of Eiland Blvd.

There, Pam offers permanent makeup and other aesthetic services, but she says that eyebrows are still her favorite.

โ€œEyebrows completely frame the face,โ€ Pam says. โ€œThey are so important.โ€

Pam has been a licensed cosmetologist in Florida since 2009. She then studied at the Boca Ta-2 School for Permanent Makeup in Williston, FL. She treats clients of all ages, and eyebrows of all sorts, from those that need to be reconstructed to those that have faded with age and exposure to the sun.

Pam has been doing the popular โ€œmicrobladingโ€ technique since she was trained in it in 2014. She uses a small blade and ink to create each individual hair. Pamโ€™s penchant for detail serves her well, as her steady hands help draw on an eyebrow which she then microblades, with each stroke adding a more natural look to the eyebrow.

โ€œMicroblading is a big thing right now,โ€™โ€™ says Pam, who is licensed through the Florida Department of Health for permanent makeup (the same license as tattooing). She encourages anyone who wants permanent makeup to schedule a free consultation with her.ย

โ€œDo your homework,โ€ she says. โ€œMake sure the person who does your eyebrows does a consultation. They should sit down with you, show you their work before and after, and also after the skin has healed from the process.โ€

Having your eyebrows done by Pam takes about an hour and the cost includes a touch-up after the first four weeks, to help deepen the color and make them more permanent.

Pam also offers permanent eyeliner, and is now offering permanent lip color, too.

โ€œI used to not like to do lips, but I learned a new technique,โ€ she says. โ€œItโ€™s not as painful and the color stays beautifully. I had mine done, and it looks so natural and full.โ€

Pam is currently charging $350 for eyeliner or eyebrows, and $450 for lips. She says she will be raising prices later this year, so anyone who wants to take advantage of her lower prices should do so before September 1.

Some of Pamโ€™s other services include scalp therapy (for women with thinning hair) and microneedling, which improves the skin by producing a slight injury to the face, causing new collagen to grow at the โ€œinjuryโ€ site.

SPOTLIGHT ON…Samantha Taylor Fitness!

Fitness professional Samantha Taylor (photo) offers fitness training and nutritional counseling for women only, helping them to โ€œage backwards,โ€ as Samantha says, at her Wesley Chapel location, across the street from Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel (FHWC) in the Shoppes of Wesley Chapel plaza on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd.

Her Pure Health Personal Training and Fit Body Boot Camp programs start with a completely free, no-obligation consultation called a โ€œBody Transformation Analysisโ€ to determine goals and plan a fitness program.

The most customized, personal and private option available is Pure Health Personal Training. This can be done in one-on-one, semi-private, or in small group sessions. In addition to the personal training, each client also meets with an assigned results coach monthly, to make sure theyโ€™re progressing.

Clients who choose Samanthaโ€™s Fit Body Boot Camp attend regular or beginner Boot Camp sessions, which vary in cardiovascular intensity levels. Several classes are offered every day, and many women choose three or more times each week to attend.

โ€œWe are getting women in amazing shape,โ€ says Samantha. She is a Certified Personal Trainer who began her career 24 years ago and launched her own business 17 years ago. During that time, she estimates that she has trained 5,000 local women. Samantha uses her experience as a personal trainer โ€“ seeing what works and what doesnโ€™t with her many clients โ€“ and her years of intensely studying the human body to coach women in fitness and healthy eating.

โ€œMost of the people who come to us have done all the diets,โ€ says Samantha. โ€œThe shakes, pills, protein diets and calorie deprivation diets. Theyโ€™re shocked they can eat the way I show them. They love the food and they lose weight.โ€

She says many of her clients see more than just weight loss โ€“ theyโ€™re getting healthier as well.

โ€œThey are preventing diseases such as heart disease and diabetes,โ€ she says. โ€œSome clients no longer have to take cholesterol or blood pressure medication, and no longer suffer from muscle pains and aches.โ€

Samanthaโ€™s original location also is nearby in Land Oโ€™Lakes, off S.R. 54 on Knight Rd., and she has recently opened her third and fourth locations in Carrollwood and Westchase, respectively.

Sheโ€™ll host another free seminar Saturday, August 26, 12:30 p.m., at her Land Oโ€™Lakes location (2206 Knight Rd.) featuring Shannon Barker, the Samantha Taylor Fitness Nutrition Educator, who holds a Bachelorโ€™s degree in Food Science & Nutrition. Taylor and Barker will help attendees achieve their fullest potential in health and fitness by learning to tweak their diets and track their calories for maximum results.

Light snacks and gourmet coffee will beย  provided at the seminar, which is free for members and guests. Reserve your space at SamanthaTaylorSeminars.com.

SPOTLIGHT ON: Oakleyโ€™s Grille!

If youโ€™ve been reading this publication for any period of time, you already know how much I love Oakleyโ€™s Grille, located at 17631 Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. (next to Dairy Queen), in the North Palms Village plaza in New Tampa (near Chiliโ€™s).

Oakleyโ€™s has been home to my favorite flame-grilled burger in New Tampa or Wesley Chapel every year since owner and long-time restaurateur Keith Oakley and his chef/son Ryan opened it more than five years ago.

Although Ryan moved away for a while, he came back a few months ago, โ€œto make sure that the burger you eat here today tastes like and is the same quality as the burger or sandwich you loved five years ago,โ€ according to Keith. The Oakleys (photo, above; you can figure out whoโ€™s who) keep introducing great new menu items, like the ghost pepper burger and blackened bleu burger pictured in the ad on page 43 of this issue, and the amazing one-pound slab of barbecue pork ribs (with fries) shown below.

Ryan (who also owns the Dr. Junk trash removal service; search โ€œDr. Junkโ€ on Facebook) created the ghost pepper burger, which features bacon, a bunch of spicy ghost peppers and a tangy barbecue-style sauce. The blackened bleu burger features Cajun spices and melted bleu cheese. The ribs are super-tender and meaty, with just the right amount (at least for me) of sweet-and-slightly-spicy BBQ sauce and are served with amazing golden-brown fries (or sub the sweet potato fries in the pic for just 50 cents more).

And best of all, Keith and Ryan are offering $2 off any sandwich or entrรฉe at Oakleyโ€™s Grille throughout August, with the coupon in our latest New Tampa issue.ย Thatโ€™s like getting the fries for free with your sandwich or enjoying a full pound of ribs with fries for just $12.99!

ย  You can order online at OakleysGrille.com or through Mobile Meals, or call (813) 523-5075 and please tell Keith and Ryan that you read about them in the New Tampa Neighborhood News! โ€” GN
