Johnny Cโ€™s Italian Eatery โ€” Delicious Food For Dining In Or Catering!ย

Try any of Johnny Cโ€™s pizzas and ask for the Mikeโ€™s Hot Honey to give it a little extra kick.ย (Some Photos are by Charmaine George and Gary Nager; others were provided by Erik Ravenna)ย

Although itโ€™s only been open a little more than a year, Johnny Cโ€™s Italian Eatery, located in the small plaza on Cross Creek Blvd. at Morris Bridge Rd., is already one of our areaโ€™s favorite restaurants for New York-style pizza and delicious Italian food.

But lately, co-owner and chef Erik Ravenna says that heโ€™s become more and more passionate about catering โ€” especially as people are starting to think about the upcoming holiday season.

Johnny Cโ€™s even recently provided breakfast for 400 people at Cypress Creek High in Wesley Chapel.ย

Johnny Cโ€™s, named for Erikโ€™s partner Pat Ciaccioโ€™s father Johnny (a long-time restaurateur himself), can accommodate parties and events โ€” on-site or at a remote location โ€” of pretty much any size, which may have something to do with the fact that Erik and Pat also used to work together at Saddlebrook Resort, where large-scale on-site catering drove the food and beverage end of the business.

โ€œI really enjoy doing large catering events,โ€ Erik says, โ€œespecially events to help people and worthwhile causes.โ€

As we reported in March of this year, Erik, who also lives in Wesley Chapel, became friends with Cypress Creek High (CCH) principal Carin Hetzler-Nettles because he has coached at the school and helped start its athletic booster club, and has always offered to help the school in any way he can. That included not only hosting an on-site pizza-making class (he now also offers cooking classes for individuals and small groups at the restaurant) for CCHโ€™s Exceptional Student Education (ESE) students, he also recently provided breakfast for 400 CCH students and teachers.

Erik loves teaching kids how to cook and offers cooking lessons for small groups and individual kids. โ€œThe kids love learning how to make pizzas and different dishes and then being able to serve what theyโ€™ve made to their families,โ€ he says. โ€œI always make it fun for them.โ€ย

But, Erik also has donated food for New Tampa schools and organizations, including Benito Middle School, Heritage Elementary, and the Breast Cancer Awareness program at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church. In Feb., he also provided dinner for more than 200 special needs teens and young adults for the Tim Tebow Foundationโ€™s โ€œNight to Shineโ€ prom-style celebration, held at Cypress Point Community Church on Morris Bridge Rd.

โ€œI do enjoy helping people whenever I can,โ€ Erik says, โ€œbut so many of the people Iโ€™ve helped also have also become my customers, whether for a dinner with their families or for a large catering. A lot of the people weโ€™ve served at these events may not have known Johnny Cโ€™s before, but they definitely do now. We often also get a banner at the schools we help, so even more people find out who we are and where weโ€™re located.โ€

When heโ€™s not giving away large amounts of his delicious food for schools and charitable events, Erik still spends most of his days in the kitchen at Johnny Cโ€™s and he says that the business has continued to grow in the 16 months or so since it opened.

Catering is a definitely a specialty at Johnny Cโ€™s, with everything from great sandwiches to shrimp scampi, chicken parmigiana, garlic knots & so much more available.ย

With his New Jersey Italian roots and extensive cooking training and experience, Erik says that although it was never his goal to run a restaurant, he loves the bustle in Johnny Cโ€™s open kitchen when the restaurant has a large weekend crowd and even the quieter times, when he can work on tweaking and perfecting his recipes.

โ€œOur menu hasnโ€™t changed much since we opened,โ€ Erik says, โ€œbut I have made minor adjustments here and there.โ€

That means Erik is still dusting Johnny Cโ€™s pizza crusts with garlic and one of his favorite pizzas โ€” the โ€œYea, Babe!โ€ โ€” was named after his father-in-law, Grandpa Billโ€™s favorite saying. The Yea Babe! features pink vodka sauce (instead of traditional red pizza sauce), Italian sausage and mozzarella. The other specialty pizzas on the menu are all named for the five boroughs of New York City, as well as SoHo, but you can get any of the 18 pizza toppings on the menu โ€” from anchovies to sundried tomatoes โ€” on any of the three sizes of pizza and in the calzones. You can even get your pizza made with a gluten-free cauliflower crust, which has become Jannahโ€™s favorite pizza at Johnny Cโ€™s, even though sheโ€™s not on any kind of gluten-free diet.

And, although none of his specialty pizzas include it, as so many are these days, Erik does also offer Mikeโ€™s Hot Honey in individual-sized mini-tubs and he always asks his new customers ordering pizza if theyโ€™ve tried it. โ€œItโ€™s definitely a game-changer,โ€ he says. โ€œIt gives your favorite pizza a little extra โ€˜kickโ€™ and many customers are now coming back and asking for it by name, no matter what kind of pizza they like best.โ€ His fried calamari appetizer also is made with the Mikeโ€™s Hot Honey.

And, while Erik offers a lot of different seafood pasta dishes (โ€œpartly because I saw that the other Italian places in New Tampa didnโ€™t offer a lot of itโ€), other than his Linguini Vongolรฉ (with clams, white wine and butter; itโ€™s also offered with marinara), I canโ€™t eat most of them because the dishes have either shrimp, mussels, or both. Even so, he says his shrimp marinara, his two โ€œFra Diavloโ€ dishes (literally meaning โ€œAmong the Devilโ€ because of their crushed red pepper โ€œheatโ€) โ€” shrimp Fra Diavlo and โ€œFrutti di Mare (โ€œFruits of the Sea,โ€ which has shrimp, mussels, clams and calamari) have all proven to be very popular. โ€œBut our #1 seafood dish is still our shrimp scampi,โ€ Erik says.

Speaking of customer favorites, Erik also says his other top sellers are the Italian meatball appetizer and Mommaโ€™s lasagna, but whether you prefer tender chicken or eggplant parmigiana over spaghettini, penne a la vodka, chicken or shrimp Alfredo, ravioli pomodoro or chicken Marsala or piccata, I have no doubt youโ€™ll enjoy Erikโ€™s house-made sauces. Theyโ€™ve become so popular he also sells the marinara, vodka, Alfredo and Marsala sauces by the quart.

โ€œWe also sell a lot of our garlic knots,โ€ Erik says, โ€œbut you gotta dip โ€˜em in the โ€˜gravyโ€™ (marinara) for the best flavor.โ€

Johnny Cโ€™s also serves a variety of โ€œgrindersโ€ (I call them โ€œsubsโ€), including the Italian โ€” with capicola, salami, ham, provolone, tomato, onion, banana peppers and roasted red peppers, plus creamy Italian dressing โ€” and hot grinders like meatball and chicken parm.

Try Johnny Cโ€™s hand-piped cannolis with crushed pistachio nuts and/or chocolate chips.ย

Finish off your meal with delicious hand-piped cannolis. I didnโ€™t know I loved them with pistachios until I had them at Johnny Cโ€™s. โ€œTheyโ€™ll make you forget youโ€™re in Pasco County,โ€ Erik said, even though he knows the restaurant is actually located within the City of Tampa limits.ย

Johnny Cโ€™s also serves beer and wine (for those 21 & older) andย has a great $6.95 kids menu. Among the different specials are โ€œWednesday is a Pastability,โ€ when you get a second pasta entrรฉe 1/2-off with the purchase of a pasta entrรฉe, and โ€œThursday Night Out,โ€ when you can buy one entrรฉe and get the second 1/2-off.ย

Johnny Cโ€™s Italian Eatery (10970 Cross Creek Blvd.) is open for dinner only Mon.-Thur. (4 p.m.-9 p.m.) and for lunch and dinner (11:30 a.m.-9 p.m.) Fri.-Sun. Fazoli’s Opens On S.R. 54!

If youโ€™re looking for a quick, casual Italian meal, whether for sit-down dining or quick drive-through to-go service, you should definitely give the new Fazoliโ€™s, located at 24791 S.R. 54 in Lutz (less than a half-mile west of the Tampa Premium Outlets), a try.

Fazoliโ€™s is sort of like an Olive Gardenย  (but with no alcohol sales) in a family-friendly environment, and also serves its own unlimited garlic breadsticks when you dine inside.

Jannah, photographer Charmaine George and I attended Fazoliโ€™s pre-opening ribbon-cutting event on May 20 with other North Tampa Bay Chamber members and had the opportunity to meet franchisee Carlos Saenz and his family. Saenz, who also has owned Dairy Queen franchises in the Tampa Bay area, welcomed everyone to what is now the only Fazoliโ€™s in the Tampa Bay area (the location on Busch Blvd. in Tampa closed a few months ago; the next nearest location is in Plant City).

We serve Fast, Fresh Italian,โ€ Saenz said. โ€œWe have people who live in this area who have been anxiously waiting for this location to open, as they have been driving to Plant City for our breadsticks and Italian specialties.โ€

Jannah, Charmaine and I sampled a few items from the Fazoliโ€™s menu, including slices of cheese and pepperoni pizza, baked lasagna, a Classic Sampler (fettuccine Alfredo, lasagna with meat sauce and spaghetti marinara with meatballs) and my favorite so far, the meatball sub. Among the other items on the Fazoliโ€™s menu include fried mozzarella bites, pepperoni pizza breadsticks, baked ziti or spaghetti, chicken fettuccine Alfredo and more โ€” all fairly priced. Another plus is that Fazoliโ€™s sells Cheesecake Factory cheesecake slices for dessert. As I said…it may not be fine Italian dining, but it is worth a visit.

For more info, visit Fazolis.com, call (813) 803-3231 or stop in and tell general manager Nicole Taylor, operations director (and Wesley Chapel resident) David Ginsberg and crew I sent you!
